EDUCATION AND OUTREACH OPPORTUNITY
ARCUS is seeking 1-3 APECS volunteers to participate in the AGU Exploration Station activity taking place at the Moscone Center on Sunday, 13 December 2009 from 12 noon to 4 pm!
The event is free and open to students and members of the public to learn about geosciences through interactive educational activities. ARCUS will be running a booth to explore exciting polar science through the exploration of polar careers. We would like APECS members, preferably Antarctic researchers to participate. If you are interested, please email Kristin Timm at kristin@arcus.org
GAIN GREAT EXPOSURE BY VOLUNTEERING AT THE IPY BOOTH IN THE EXHIBITION HALL
The IPY International Programme Office (Dave Carlson and Melissa Deets) will be coordinating an IPY Booth again this year (open Tuesday through Friday noon). This is a great place to use as a meeting point and to get to know some of our biggest supports - and to help recruit new members! The IPY Office would love for APECS members to volunteer to spend an hour or two during the week to help showcase the great researchers that were part of IPY. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Melissa at ipyipo@bas.ac.uk.
PREPARING FOR TENURE: A WORKSHOP FOR TENURE-TRACK FACULTY
Sunday, December 13, 2009, 9 am to 5 pm at Moscone Convention Center, San Francisco, in association with the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting. (You do NOT need to register for the meeting to attend the workshop).
This one-day workshop, part of professional development program, On the Cutting Edge, is designed to help tenure-track geoscience faculty make their strongest case for tenure. Workshop discussions and activities will focus on analyses of CVs, personal statements (narratives), and teaching materials that may be used as supporting documentation in tenure applications. Participants will have the opportunity to get feedback and advice on their own preparation towards tenure. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to review several examples of successful geoscience tenure packages from range of institutions.
Cost is $50 and includes breakfast and lunch.

A major expansion of the Permafrost Tunnel near Fox, Fairbanks, Alaska will form a key part of the Alaska Permafrost Research Center. The expansion is being headed by U.S. Army Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory (CRREL) and University of Alaska Fairbanks Institute of Northern Engineering. The tunnel expansion, beginning in 2010, will more than double the current tunnel length and is designed to promote research into critical areas related to permafrost science and engineering. Details of the project will be presented, and ideas and comments are much welcomed.
