We invite all Antarctic researchers, to consider participating in a unique series of music and cultural arts events that will be held in conjunction with the next Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) Open Science Conference in July 2012 in Portland Oregon. The events will highlight the creative talents of Antarctic scientists who use music, film, art, photography in relaying their research results and science messages to the general public (and to others in the science community).
The theme of the events will be "Antarctic Perspectives - connecting music and the arts to science". The objectives are first to portray Antarctic science results and issues to the general public in a more interesting and understandable way without compromising accuracy and validity, and second to increase the community interactions of scientists and the general public. The uniqueness of the events is that to the extent possible, the scientists will be the performers, artists, and creators of the music and cultural arts portraying their science results. The primary audience for this event will be the general public.
We currently envision an orchestral variety performance, some small ensemble music presentations, an Antarctic photographs/art exhibit, film presentations, and a books display with author discussions.
The music organizers wish to form a SCAR orchestra, and invite the active musicians in the Antarctic research community to participate.
Our science community is rich with talents in music and the cultural arts, and the organizers hope that you might be interested in collaborating with your colleagues in these events. If you wish to learn more and have the possibility of participating please: 1. Send an e-mail to Alan Cooper at ; and 2. In the e-mail, include your contact information and a brief description of your interests and background in music and/or other cultural arts. Upon your response, I will send you additional information according to your interests, and will forward your information to the event selection committee that will have members from each of the cultural arts themes.
Please help us reach all Antarctic researchers by forwarding this message to your Antarctic colleagues.
Thank you on behalf of the steering committee for the music and cultural arts events.
Alan Cooper
