Working Groups
http://www.apecs.is/administrator/index.php?option=com_categories§ion=com_content&task=edit&cid[]=137&type=contentWorking on projects and ideas together, is the main way APECS works toward shaping the future of polar research. Ideas such as the Virtual Poster Session, the APECS Mentorship Programme, the Literature Discussion Forum and the many workshops and panel discussion we have - all started with a few talented people working together with a specific aim - to help each other and to create a better way to conduct polar research and to help others learn about it.
APECS Working Groups are how new ideas become reality.
Find out more about out current working groups and our past working groups that have now wrapped up their projects, or become part a large group.
Below you can find updates and notices about some of things that are happening in the different working groups.

Current Working Groups
Check out our current Working Groups!
Getting involved in them is quite easy: just contact the chair of the Working Group and ask how you can help.

Creating a New Working Group
We all have great ideas and projects that we want to make happen, but often we need a little help from our colleagues. APECS has created a simple procedure to help you take your idea, find colleagues with similar interests and make that great thought in your head into something that can help shape the future of polar research. Finding additional partners to help your ideas become reality is the secret to the success of your working group.

Past Working Groups
APECS is a busy group of people, and as working groups finish the tasks at hand we wrap up projects and archive the working group's information here. Our working groups are busy and active with their tasks at hand, and here you can see what they have been up to.

Funding Resources
Ever wanted to go to a conference/meeting/workshop or field school and did not know what channels to follow to find travel funding? Did you wish that there was some database that you could consult to help you identify who to contact?
This is what the new APECS Funding Resources Working Group is all about! To work together to create an user-friendly, international and interdisciplinary database of funding bodies.

Sediment Budgets
As you all probably know cold regions are undergoing rapid environmental changes in response to global warming. One of the most important effects of those changes is the transformation of cold regions land surface and sediment fluxes through the landscape. However, in contrast to development in mid and low latitude sediment budget studies, relatively little is known regarding the potential impacts of climate and sea-level changes on polar and other cold regions sediment fluxes.
That's why we formed a new APECS Working Group on Sediment Budgets in Cold Environments which aims to address this deficiency by creating a space for discussion and research cooperation for all young scientists interested in understanding the mechanisms and patterns of sediment fluxes in cold regions. As studying sediment budgets is one of the most interdisciplinary types of research in geosciences we strongly believe that our activities will interest broad community of APECS members.

Mentorship
The APECS Mentor Program was officially launched in February 2010 by the APECS Executive Committee. This is an exciting initiative for APECS because it allows our members to tap into the experience of more senior researchers and polar professionals. It also enables the organization to engage more actively with more senior people in the polar research community.
This initiative is an extension to the strong track record that APECS has already established by hosting mentor panels at major conferences, and we would like to continue to build up our mentor database and actively publicize this program.
The mentor database consists of an online form for people to sign up as APECS mentors (http://apecs.is/mentors) and this database is accessible to APECS members who want to find a mentor. The level of involvement is totally up to the individual mentor, but activities may include meeting students at conferences, participating in APECS mentor panels and providing general career guidance for young scientists.
For more information or to get involved, contact Gerlis Fugmann.
