APECS Webinars 2014-2015

bred

APECS works with mentors and partners to develop webinars to assist APECS members and other early career scientists with their career development goals. The webinars give early career scientists a venue to learn valuable career skills that are usually not covered in their academic training. The webinar audience consists of graduate students, post-docs, and early career faculty across several disciplines. Since its inception in 2010, hundreds of people from around the world have participated in the webinars.

A recording and archive of each webinar is available on the past APECS webinar page and on the APECS Vimeo site so that anyone can watch the videos anytime.

How to Participate in a Career Development Webinar?

Participation in the webinars is open to all and completly free. If you have not participated in an online webinar before, its actually not as difficult as it may seem, and we can help you every step of the way. To attend a webinar you just need your computer or smartphone and an internet connection. We only use VOIP, so no telephone is required. We are not using webcams, so you can participate in your pajamas!

If you see a webinar you would like to join, click the link to the right of the webinar to register for it. If the webinar is in session, the link will take you right to webinar in session. If the webinar has not yet begun, you can register for the event. Registering for the webinars ahead of time is a good idea because you will automatically recieve an email with instructions and reminders 1 day and 1 hour before the event.

Thanks to an in-kind contribution from Bredbåndsfylket, we are using GoToWebinar.

If you have any questions, potential topics, or potential presenters to suggest, please contact at info@apecs.is.

APECS is pleased to announce its 2014-2015 webinar series, highlighting a sample of topics available to graduates with degrees in the sciences. The speakers in this series represent a cross-section of the worlds of academia, government, and non-profit work. All have (or are nearing completion of) advanced degrees in the earth, physical, or biological sciences. Many have polar connections.

Each webinar will last approximately one hour and will be broadcast online using the GoToWebinar platform. The webinars will begin at different time during the day - check the times below, and use the World Clock to convert the webinar times to your timezone.

To join a webinar or register in advance, you can simply click registration link next to the selected webinar. By registering in advance you will recieve detailed instructions and email reminders about the webinar.

Building a personal/academic website
Jean-Sébastien Moore
Webinar ID:411988233
As early career scientists, we should all be concerned about advertising ourselves. One of the best ways of doing this is to build a website showcasing your work. I will first go over some of the numerous alternatives that exist for you to easily build and host a free website. I will then go into more details on the process of building the site with the tool that I myself prefer: Weebly. I will then share some thoughts on what I think is good design for a personal/academic website.
More webinars will be announced in the next few weeks here!
