A major part of the World Summit was a training workshop on polar data sharing and open science. This workshop aimed to educate users on the topics of open access, open data sharing and open science. Specifically, the workshop intented to provide guidance for early career researchers while raising awareness of open access and data management requirements as well as data standards. Main objective of this workshop was to give early career scientists the necessary tools to make their own data available more useful and showing them how to take advantage of the benefits of open and interoperable data in their own research.

Present and potential future challenges the Polar Regions are facing, evoked by the changing climate, led major Arctic and Antarctic science institutions to assess priorities of future Polar research. This workshop reflected on recent efforts done (e.g., the SCAR Horizon Scan, ICARP III) and introduce resulting visions for future research in both Polar Regions. Ultimately, this workshop intended to provide a forum and initiated the discussion between senior scientists and professionals, who have set future research directions, and early career scientists.
