Career Development Webinars

There are so many skills that are needed to have a successful career in science - whether its in academia, industry, administration, education or business... but where can you learn those skills. Most graduate programmes do a great job at teaching you how to do science, but few provide the 'soft skill' training needed such as proposal writing, communication skills, marketing, networking, international relationships, and more. APECS together with the NSF Arctic System Science Thermokarst Project and the University of Canterbury offer free weekly online career development seminars to help you prepare for a successful career... and if you can't make the live presentation, we have the videos for you to download to your iPod, iPhone or whatever device you use!

Polar Graduate Programmes database

Are you interested in learning more about the Arctic, Antarctic or the cryosphere in general? Thinking of going to graduate school or gaining extra credibility through a certificate programme or another degree? Here is a resource to help you get started in finding a programme that is right for you. This searchable database includes graduate programmes that have a focus or specialty in any field of Arctic, Antarctic, Alpine or other areas within the cryosphere – ranging from social sciences and law to ecology, geology, physics and more. The purpose is to provide prospective students with information on those programmes, such as disciplinary focus areas, website links, typical program duration, application deadlines, costs and, where available, financial support.

Preparing for and Attending Conferences

We all know that one of the most important parts of establishing a successful science career (or any career for that matter) is the network of colleagues you create. Conferences are a great way to meet people – you share ideas, develop new projects, learn new techniques, find your next employer or employee, and sometimes even have a little fun. This section of the APECS website is dedicated to helping you navigate conferences – from writing an abstract about your work, designing your oral or poster presentation, finding travel funding, serving as a session convener/chair or on a committee, organizing a side workshop or panel – there lots of things you can do and opportunities to take advantage of to start building a great network of colleagues around the world.

APECS Funding Resources Database

Ever wanted to go to a conference/meeting/workshop or field school and did not know what channels to follow to find travel funding? Did you wish that there was some database that you could consult to help you identify who to contact? Need a little bit of seed money to start a new research project? Or maybe you need some extra funds to have a few more analyses done to complete your next paper? The APECS Funding Resources Working Group has creating this user-friendly, international and interdisciplinary database of funding resources. It grows by people like you adding opportunities that you know of.

Polar Outreach Catalogue

Since the close of the International Polar Year (IPY) in the Spring of 2010, the IPY Education, Outreach and Communication (EOC) Assessment Project has been working to collect information on Education, Outreach and Communication projects that occurred during the 2007-2008 International Polar Year. We are happy to now present the Polar Outreach Catalogue, the result of an ICSU funded project examining the lessons learned during the IPY that can be used for other international science programmes to plan effective outreach. This catalogue is an online searchable tool documenting many of the oureach efforts of IPY.

'Cool' Speakers list

As the public’s interest in the Polar Regions is increasing, the need for easy access to experts living and working in these areas is more important than ever before. In addition, as more young researchers are being trained, advice from mentors is increasingly critical. Recognizing the imporance of education and outreach, the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists (APECS), together with the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) have partnered to create this database of ‘cool’ speakers that are willing to share their knowledge and experiences about the most rapidly changing areas of the planet.

APECS Reviewer Database

Are you writing something and need a fresh pair of eyes to help you? Submitting your first abstract and not sure if you are doing it correctly? Maybe you are a programme manager for a national funding organisation and need to find people to review some proposals? Or maybe you are looking to get some experience reviewing and would like people to know that they can send you things? If you answered 'YES' to any of these questions - You have come to the right place! APECS is happy to provide you with this great resource to find reviewers and to provide reviewing experience for those who want it! Have a look through our database - You'll see people list their major area of expertise, as well as the types of things they are willing to review and often provide the time they need to review something. When contacting people, please tell them that you found their information from the APECS Reviewers Database and be sure to respect their time and don't expect them to review something for you overnight.

APECS Mentors

APECS activities have aimed to help provide a continuum of knowledge in polar and cryospheric research. We are very grateful to the many senior researchers and professionals that have served as mentors for our many activities. In an effort to assure a broad representation of mentors at our events, and to help young researchers around the globe develop relationships with senior mentors, APECS is creating a database of those people willing to serve as mentors to young researchers in a variety of ways. This may include meeting students at conferences, answering email enquiries and providing general career guidance for young scientists.

Arctic Calendar

Produced by APECS partner ARCUS (http://www.arcus.org) and IASC (http://www.iasc.info), the Arctic Calendar (http://www.arcus.org/calendar) is an online, searchable calendar of major meetings and events relevant to the arctic science, education, and policy communities. Many events will be included in the APECS calendar, but the Arctic Calendar is also available as an RSS feed.

The Arctic Calendar is a community resource for tracking and publicizing major arctic events and conferences, and to avoid conflicting meeting dates. All meeting organizers are encouraged to submit the event for inclusion on the calendar to maintain the calendar's usefulness as a communication and planning tool. Events can be submitted through the online form at: http://calendar.arcus.org/submit.html or by emailing .

United States Polar Rock Repository

The United States Polar Rock Repository is a national facility at the Byrd Polar Research Center, The Ohio State University. It is supported by the National Science Foundation's Office of Polar Programs. The repository houses rock collections from Antarctica and the Arctic, along with field notes, photos, maps, paleomagnetic cores, rock and mineral residues, thin sections, and microfossil mounts, microslides and residues.

Samples may be requested for research, education or museum use. The Detailed Search option (shown below) allows for searches using multiple terms. Please choose 'Add to Sample Bag' (it is like a shopping cart) to request samples. Email the Curator with questions about Antarctic geology, upcoming collections, Excel spreadsheet data sets, etc. Visitors are welcome at the USPRR by appointment.

World Lecture Project

The world lecture project - (wlp)° is an online library for video lectures in any language and of any faculty from all over the world. The project collects all links to video lectures and their metadata in one freely accessible database. A search engine helps the users to find the lecture of their choice easily. They can search lectures according to various criteria: theme, faculty, country, language and others.
