Mailing lists
One of the great opportunities that APECS presents for young researchers is its ability to connect students of the same, or similar disciplines, as well as motivate students who might have an interest in broadening their academic spectrum into new fields of research. If you are looking for a way to connect with other people in your discipline or that are interested in the same topics as you are - we suggest you subscribe to one of the APECS discussion lists. If you have ideas on new lists and are willing to help moderate them, please let us know. If you are looking to join the entire APECS mailing list, just follow this link!

APECS Social Sciences Research Group
RosaThis mailing list is for APECS members with interests in polar social sciences in its broadest meaning, including anthropology, human geography, human and public health, international relations, law, political sciences or in any other field concerning human live in the polar areas. The purpose of this list is to communicate and share discipline specific information and facilitate communications within smaller group with similar interests. This may include announcements of relevant meetings and organization of APECS events, discussions of actualities within the field or career development.

For more information on Social Sciences activities within APECS, please contact Rosa Rut Thorisdottir (rosa.thoris@gmail.com).  To join the mailing list, send an email to info@apecs.is asking to join the social sciences mailing list. To contact the list, send an email to social-science@apecs.is.

Sea Ice Research Group
APECS has created a listerv that anyone can join that will provide a forum for discussion of sea ice news and developments in field results or questions, publication and future research. This list caters to those experienced in polar research, just getting into the field or thinking of trying it out. Oceanographers, marine biologists, geophysicists, and anyone else interested are welcome!

If you would like to join this group, please contact info@apecs.isThis e-mail address is being protected from spambots. APECS Glaciology

apecs_glaciology_photo Welcome to the Glaciology mailing list!! As a new initiative of APECS, discipline mailing lists have been created to enhance networking within young researchers from specific areas of polar research. Our glaciology group will discuss, inform and share anything related to the study of ice and glaciology. If you are interested in participating, please contact info@apecs.is in order to be added to the list. For more information on the group or to suggest some ideas, please contact Oliver Marsh. Mails to the group should be addressed to glaciology@apecs.is

Thanks for your time, and please feel free to pass this invitation on to colleagues who may be interested! You can also subscribe to an RSS Feed of the Glaciology list.

Polar Microbial Ecology Research Group
microbesWe invite you to join the Polar Microbial Ecology working group, which at the present time consists of a mailing list of about a dozen early career scientists who met at the Oslo IPY science conference in June. We welcome anyone interested in sharing of ideas and projects related to the microbial ecology of the polar regions, including terrestrial and aquatic systems, using culture-dependent and culture-independent techniques. We plan to organize sessions at relevant conferences, share new research results with each other and the public, identify opportunities for field work or shared sample collection, and help each other overcome methodological difficulties which are so pervasive at the poles.

To join the list, simply reply to info@apecs.is with your interest. For more information on the group or to suggest some ideas, please contact R. Eric Collins.

Thanks for your time, and please feel free to pass this invitation on to colleagues who may be interested!

APECS Atmospheric Science and Climate Research Group

Welcome to the APECS Atmospheric Sciences and Climate Listserve, where researchers in climate, atmospheric, terrestrial and marine sciences, as well as mathematics, physics, astronomy and all fields in-between are invited to join our online working group. It is generally accepted in the scientific community that climate is undergoing a significant change in which anthropogenic activities constitute an important factor. To be able to understand and mitigate the driving forces of climate change as well as its consequences we need experimental research and modeling studies. Since climate change is most obviously noted in the polar regions polar research can provide very valuable results for general climate science. One of the main goals of this listserve is to discuss some of the central ideas and techniques of climate science. We will discuss issues related to paleoclimatology, astronomy, solar-terrestrial relationships and the collection of experimental, observational, in-situ, and remote sensing data of the polar climate system.

If you are interested in participating in these discussions, please contact info@apecs.is in order to be added to the list. To send something to the group email: climate@apecs.is. You can also subscribe to an RSS Feed for this email list.

If you are interested in learning more about this field, please contact Jenny Fisher or Julia Schmale.

Polar Heritage Mailing List

scotts_boxAPECS has created a listerv that anyone can join that will provide a forum for discussion of polar heritage news, field and archival results or questions, publication and future research. This list caters to those experienced in polar research, just getting into the field or thinking of trying it out. Archaeologists, conservators and other heritage professionals welcome!

If you would like to join this group, please contact info@apecs.is with the name of the group in the subject line.

If you are interested in learning more about this field, please contact Emily Jateff, the APECS Archaeology Research Coordinator.

Terrestrial Biology Research Mailing List

ipy_fieldschool_2010_plants The APECS Terrestrial Biology Listserve is a venue for connecting with polar terrestrial biologists around the world. Our topics include (but are not limited to) plants, animals, nutrient cycling, and microbial processes. Our emphasis is on idea exchange and discussions of relevant topics and papers all of us will help to identify, and in the process form a community focused on Arctic and Antarctic terrestrial research interests and promoting interdisciplinary collaboration. Everyone is invited to join and exchange ideas, ask questions, etc.

If you are interested in participating in these discussions, please contact Charles Lee in order to be added to the list.

If you would like to send a message to the group, please use this address: terrestrial-biology@apecs.is

Polar Policy Mailing List
a-polar-bear-in-drifting-and-uList Moderators: Nikolas Sellheim and Harry Borlase

Welcome to the Polar Policy Listserve, where young researchers in political science, governance, law, and international relations and all fields in-between are invited to join our online network. As a starting point, the group will exchange and discuss current and pressing issues related to polar policy, including legal, political, anthropological or other related fields relevant to the polar regions. Issues related to climate change governance, sovereignty and security, international cooperation, indigenous peoples rights or environmental policies are encouraged to be discussed here.

As always, people from all disciplines are encouraged to join. Discussion on what exactly policy is, what it means and how it is formed can help young scientists realize that all forms of research have policy implications. Sharing ideas about how to frame and communicate science with policy in mind are important points of discussion for the group.

If you are interested in participating in these discussions, please contact Nikolas and Harry in order to be added to the list.
