8th UK Sea Ice Group Annual Meeting

13.00 Thursday 16 September to 16.30 on Friday 17 September 2010

Introduction

Recent climatic changes in the Arctic Ocean and an unprecedented rapid decline of Arctic sea ice cover, occurring during the last decade, are anticipated to impact regional and global climate, environment, marine industries, and society. Amongst the possible benefits of the change are the exploitation of natural resources and navigation, although those might be overwhelmed by negative impacts, as destabilised climate and ecosystems. To understand and predict Arctic Change is the pressing issue for sea ice researchers, oceanographers and climate modellers.

The UK Sea Ice Group
The sea ice research community in the UK includes some 60 researchers and numbers are growing. The community has internationally recognised professional expertise. The purpose of the UK Sea Ice Group (http://www.cpom.org/ukseaicegroup/) is to foster collaboration and exchange of ideas within the UK sea ice community and allied areas such as physical oceanography, marine biology, and climate modelling. The UK Sea Ice Group holds informal annual meetings, typically in the first half of September with the venue rotation between UK oceanographic centres.

The 2010 Meeting
The 8th UK Sea Ice Group meeting will take place at National Oceanography Centre Southampton (http://noc.ac.uk/) in Seminar Room 13 of the centre on Thursday 16th September and Friday 17th September 2010. The format of the meeting is two half-day sessions. The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on the first day, finishing around 6.30 p.m. On the second day it will continue from 9 a.m. and will conclude at around 4.30 p.m. Time slots for informal discussions are allocated at the end of each day. Participants are cordially invited to attend the conference meal which will take place on Thursday 16th at 8.00 p.m. in the centrally located “Kuti’s  Restaurant”, where a buffet will be offered.

The deadline for registration is Friday 2nd July 2010.
