National Education and Outreach Programmes

Within APECS, national committees have been networking young polar researchers in their countries and involving these networks in educational outreach to other young people. The national programmes include activities such as contests for secondary school students to learn about the Polar Regions, exhibitions of student art, talks by early career scientists at schools and short videos on the IPY for TV. Visit the following sites or contact national representatives for more information.

Don’t see your country on the list? Contact Kristin Timm for information on setting up an outreach programme in your country.

Germany:  Rainer Lehmann

rainerDr. Rainer Lehmann is a teacher and polar researcher who specializes in geography and biology. His interest as a researcher is mainly in geosciences, in particular, geoecology.

After his studies in Heidelberg, he joined an expedition in the High Canadian Arctic, which was followed by research projects in Spitsbergen. He completed his Ph.D. in Basel. Since 1998, he has been a teacher for Geography and Biology in Hannover.  Besides his teaching position, Rainer Lehmann organizes special student projects, intended to inspire students for the natural sciences.
During IPY, he coordinated the project “Coole Klassen”. Thanks to this project, several teachers went to the Poles on polar research expeditions and were able to apply their experiences in their classrooms. He also worked for education & outreach in Antarctica 2007.

Rainer Lehmann is  head of the working group of polar teachers at German Society for Polar Research (DGP) and a member of the department of geodidactics at Alfred-Wegener-Stiftung. His initiative “Coole Klassen” will be continued beyond IPY by the DGP. If you are interested in education and outreach in Germany, please contact Rainer Lehmann. Contact Rainer.
