ipy logoThe latest International Polar Year (2007-2009; IPY) was a huge success in many ways with education, outreach and communication (EOC) an important part of that success. After the close of IPY there were many lessons to learn from the numerous EOC efforts that took place around the globe. Recognizing IPY EOC as an important area that the world of science could learn from Jenny Baeseman (APECS) and Dave Carlson (UNAVCO, formerly IPY IPO) spearheaded an inventory and assessment of the IPY EOC activites.

In total over 550 prjects were inventoried in over 70 countries. Activities, projects and programmes spanned the globe in more than 25 languages. The results of this study are the only known inventory and assessment of global IPY EOC activities to date. You can view the various project products below including a serachable database of all the activities (the Polar Outreach catalogue) and the formal ICSU report.

Spread the word about IPY EOC lessons

IPY Outreach Assessment Report available

ipy eoc report coverOne year after the launch of the International Polar Year (IPY) Education, Outreach and Communication (EOC) Assessment Project the task of inventorying and investigating the hundreds of IPY EOC programmes that occurred during the IPY 2007-08 is now complete. Supported by APECS, IASC and SCAR, this ICSU funded project is the only global examination of what happened in outreach during IPY. The latest IPY event was one of the most ambitious polar research programmes to date, tens of thousands of scientists and students participated, but IPY also set out to involve members of the general public in active polar science endeavours on a global scale. How successful was this part of the IPY plan?

With over 550 IPY EOC activities, from more than 70 countries in 25 languages IPY EOC is one of the largest global investments in science outreach to date. The IPY EOC Assessment brought together educators, communications personnel and researchers and the resulting report examines the success of IPY EOC efforts, and discusses why IPY EOC was able to reach its goals and beyond. From the experience of IPY, the report also outlines a set of lessons learned on how to improve science outreach across a variety of disciplines. These lessons will be useful for other science outreach projects - large or small - regional, national or international.

IPY EOC went to new heights, depths and extremes to take people to the poles and to take the poles to the people. Now the legacy of IPY outreach is helping to shape the future of science education and outreach.

Read the report or search the online Polar Outreach Catalogue - a growing inventory of these IPY projects and new outreach efforts to help educate the world about the global importance of the polar regions.

IPY EOC Assessment at the 30th ICSU General Assembly Meeting

IPY Outreach Assessment Poster cover shotWe are happy to have the IPY EOC Assessment Porject Report presented for the first time this month at the the 30th ICSU General Assembly Meeting held in Rome, Italy.

The latest International Polar Year (2007-2009; IPY), sponsored by ICSU and WMO, was a huge success with education, outreach and communication (EOC) an important part of that success.

Jenny Baeseman, a lead PI on the project, will be representing APECS and presenting the results from the year long inventory and assessment of global IPY EOC programmes to the funders and supporters of the report including ICSU, IASC and SCAR.

Polar Outreach Catalogue

The Polar Outreach Catalogue is here!

Over the last several months the International Polar Year (IPY) Education, Outreach and Communication (EOC) Assessment Committee has been working to collect information on Education, Outreach and Communication projects that occurred during the 2007-2009 International Polar Year.

We have now collected survey responses from more than 200 IPY EOC activities and have information on more than 500 education and outreach programs. Thank you to all those who have taken the time filled out our survey, your efforts are greatly appreciated and we have included all the entries into our current catalogue of IPY EOC efforts, which you can take a look at here.

You can view the serachable catalogue herehere, under the IPY Outreach Assessment project on the APECS site. While we are in the review stage the catalogue is only showing a few information feilds.  When the inventorying process is complete the catalogue will be available in full detail.

If you worked on an EOC during the latest IPY and it is not in our records we still do not have any record of it. We are closing the survey on March 31st so this is your last opportunity to have your IPY EOC efforts included in our assessment. Please take a look through our catalogue!  All the records submitted to date are included, so if you don't see, we don't have a record of it!  And if you know of any more IPY EOC activities please take the time to enter them in order to have them recorded.

What group is missing from the word cloud above?  All the titles of the over 140 education, outreach and communication programs that have been entered in the IPY EOC survey to date are in the above word cloud.  Can you see which group is missing?  Many groups have done a great job at entering their activites including ANDRILL and Latitude 60! in Portugal.  But we are missing APECS events!  If you helped organize and run an APECS EOC event during the IPY we need your help in making sure we know about it.

IPY EOC Survey results to date

We have almost 100 IPY education, outreach and communication surveys completed, with hopefully many more to come. As you can see in the word cloud below there are several areas that people have been great at adding information on, but there are still many areas that we need to help to learn more about what happened during the latet IPY.

IPY EOC Survey now available online!

The International Polar Year (IPY) has now come to a close. At the start of the latest IPY education, outreach and communication activities (EOC) were recognized as important components to the overall success of the biggest IPY to date. Numerous activities took place during the IPY, starting in 2007 until the official close of the IPY in 2010, on all 7 continents. Now that we have wrapped up the latest IPY, the IPY EOC Assessment Committee is trying to inventory and asses the many EOC activities and events, and your help would be much appreciated.

To date we have information on over 350 activities, some endorsed by IPY and many that were simply IPY inspired, but we know that many more took place. You can help us to assess these worldwide EOC events and your own EOC efforts by filling in our short survey. The survey will only take 10 to 15 minutes of your time, and it will help make sure that your EOC efforts get counted in our international report.

If you organized or manged an education, outreach or communication activity during during IPY 2007-2009 filling out this suvey will help us understand what EOC took place and make sure your efforts are counted among the global efforts. We invite all those that did EOC to fill in the survey, from those with IPY endorsed programs to activities that were IPY inspired. All of these events, big and small, contributed to the huge international momentum of IPY and we your help to understand the big picture.

Please help us spread the word, if you know of EOC programs please let them know about tha IPY EOC Assessment Porject.

ICSU supported assessment of IPY EOC activities

ICSU (International Council for Science) is a non-governmental organization with a global membership of national scientific bodies (121 members) and international scientific unions (30 members). With its involvement often behind the scenes, ICSU's role is to mobilise knowledge and resources within the international scientific community to strengthen international science for the benefit of society. The latest International Polar Year (IPY) was just one of the many science initiatives that ICSU has supported.

Now that the latest IPY has come to a close ICSU, along with two of its members, IASC (International Arctic Science Committee) and SCAR (Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research), are interested in the Education, Outreach and Communication that occurred during IPY. To do this ICSU is funding APECS and its partners to conduct an inventory and assess the lessons learned from conducting such a successful, global EOC initiative.

IPY EOC Assessment Meeting in Bremerhaven, Germany

bremerhaven group meetingThe IPY Education, Outreach and Communication Assessment Committee was hosted by AWI in Bremerhaven, Germany at the end of October, 2010. We had a very prodcutive meeting with our international assessment team and have made a great start in assessing IPY EOC activities and formulating our recommendations on why the EOC during the latest IPY was so successful.

We are moving forward on creating an interntaional survey that will be sent out worldwide to assess the IPY EOC on a global level. The team also discussed the possibility of a searchable repository of the EOC activities and the need for a system that awards credit to scientists for their EOC work.

You can find the notes from the meeting in Bremerhaven here where we discussed various EOC topics, ideas of why the IPY EOC worked so well and how to carry these lessons forward.

Minutes from the IPY EOC Assessment Committee meeting.
