APECS at American Society of Limnology and Oceanography 2008

Polar Science: Career Paths, Funding, and Resources
10 June, 2008
Delta Hotel, St. John’s, Newfoundland
APECS workshop was part of the 2008 American Society of Limnology and Oceanography Summer Meeting

Report Submitted by Lynn Abramson, Alex Poulain, Pedro Echeveste, Kim Keats

There were 4 panellists and ~25 students in attendance.

Overview:
Each of the 4 speakers provided an overview of the workshop topic from their perspective.  We had John Hobbie, Warwick Vincent, and Carlos Duarte as speakers, plus one student- Pedro Escheveste- who gave a brief overview of APECS and what resources it can provide for young scientists.  The speakers provided a nice comparison and contrast of the funding, opportunities, job market, etc. in the U.S., Canada, and Europe.  Then we opened the discussion up for questions.

Students seemed to really enjoy the workshop and get a lot of good information out of it that will be helpful in their career development.  One of the speakers prepared a PowerPoint presentation and we are going to post it on our ASLO student website.

Support for this workshop:

ASLO provided lunches for students attending at $18 pp
