- Graduate Position
A fully-funded PhD student position is available at the Department of Geosciences at the University of Oslo focused on global glacier modeling.
The successful applicant will work on global-scale modeling of glaciers (outside the ice sheets) using the global model PyGEM with the ultimate goal to make global-scale glacier mass change projections based on an ensemble of climate projections. A focus will be on model improvement, for example, with respect to calving or dynamic adjustments, as well as on model calibration and validation using available in-situ and remote sensing data products.
The PhD student will have a great deal of freedom to shape the exact methodology, modeling experiments and research questions of the project within the overarching topic of global glacier modeling. The student will be involved in the international Glacier Model Intercomparison Project GlacierMIP (https://www.climate-cryosphere.org/mips/glaciermip), and thus have ample opportunities for national and international collaboration, including in particular collaboration with PyGEM developer, Dr. David Rounce at Carnegie Mellon University, USA.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in geophysics, geosciences, physics, computer science, mathematics, environmental or atmospheric sciences, engineering, or any other related field. The candidate should have a strong quantitative background and experience in programing (Python, Matlab or similar). Previous experience in glaciology, numerical modeling and handling of large data set is an advantage.
Application deadline: February 28, 2021
Starting date negotiable but no later than September 1, 2021
