PhD on Greenland freshwater flux
Boise, Idaho, USA
Boise State University
  • Graduate Position

The Cryosphere Geophysics And Remote Sensing (CryoGARS) group at Boise State University has an opportunity for a graduate student to conduct NSF-funded interdisciplinary research that aims to further understand and map freshwater fluxes from Greenland. The research will incorporate a variety of remote sensing datasets to develop next-generation estimates of iceberg discharge, melt rates, and freshwater fluxes to Greenland's fjords and coastal regions. The project also incorporates outreach and science communication activities, including working with an artist to develop iceberg imagery to inspire the public and iceberg melt demonstrations for grade-school students. Research will be performed in collaboration with Dr. Twila Moon at the National Snow and Ice Data Center and Dr. Dustin Carroll at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories. Through this work, the student will gain expertise in glaciology, coastal oceanography, and working with both observations and numerical models.

We seek a student who is excited to engage in collaborative, interdisciplinary research while completing a graduate degree in Geophysics, Geoscience, or Scientific Computing. Student background may include degrees from a wide range of topics, including but not limited to computer science, physics, applied mathematics, geography, oceanography, and earth sciences. The professional development of the student will be supported through a variety of research and engagement activities. The fully-funded student position is available starting as early as January 2022 and applications will be evaluated as they are received. Applications must be submitted through the university’s graduate application portal. We welcome and encourage applicants with backgrounds historically underrepresented in STEM and Earth Sciences. Note that graduate programs in the Department of Geosciences at Boise State do not require or consider GRE scores in admissions. Check out the Boise State Graduate College, as well as the Department of Geosciences and PhD in Computing program websites, for information about the university and graduate degree programs.
