Postdoc in subglacial hydrology modeling
Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
University of Waterloo
  • Postdoctoral Researcher

Announcing a postdoctoral position in subglacial hydrology modeling of the former Fennoscandian Ice Sheet with Dr. Christine Dow at the University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.

Start date: the position is available from January 2022 onwards.

Duration: 12 months guaranteed funding, an additional 12 months contingent on funding and performance.

Salary: $45-55,000 CAD + benefits

Employment type: Full time, although part-time and flexible working arrangements can be negotiated.

Project Description:

This project is a collaboration between the University of Waterloo, Canada and the University of Turku, Finland and will involve applying the well-established subglacial hydrology model, GlaDS, to the Fennoscandian Ice Sheet to examine the evolution of mid-to large scale subglacial features, and the role of hydrology on ice dynamics. Model results will be validated with recent high-resolution mapping of subglacial features and drainage routes completed by the University of Turku. The combined datasets will be highly valuable for assessing landform evolution in paleo settings, but also for examining how the model interacts with high-resolution basal topography that is difficult to obtain for contemporary ice.

As the successful candidate, you will be joining the University of Waterloo Glaciology Group, which is a diverse and interdisciplinary group currently hosting 9 MSc and PhD students, and 2 postdoctoral fellows based in the Department of Applied Mathematics and the Department of Geography and Environmental Management. You will have opportunities to travel to Finland for collaboration meetings at the University of Turku, and to present at international conferences.

  • A PhD degree in Earth Science, Geography, Geology, Applied Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Experience using MATLAB and/or Python
  • Publications in peer-reviewed international journals
  • Previous modeling experience would be highly beneficial

Application packages should include the following items:

  • A cover letter outlining your research interests and relevant training and experience
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Contact information for at least 2 references

Please email applications to Dr. Christine Dow (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.). Applications will be reviewed beginning September 30th and will continue until the position is filled.
