Graduate student position: fluvial geomorphology and paleoclimatology of the Antarctic Dry Valleys
Lowell, Massachusetts, USA
University of Massachusetts Lowell
  • Graduate Position

The McMurdo Dry Valleys, Antarctica are home to a seasonally active hydrologic system. Streams are fed by summer meltwater from local glaciers and snowbanks, and are therefore responsive to changes in summer climatic conditions. This project seeks to investigate the relationship between past meltwater streamflow and regional climate change. The researchers plan to acquire a Holocene to late Pleistocene record of stream activity from alluvial fans in the Dry Valleys.

The study will include field research in Antarctica, stratigraphic studies, GIS-based analyses of meltwater sources and deposits, and geochemical analyses. The successful candidate needs to have a bachelor’s degree (earned by summer 2022) in geology, Earth sciences, or environmental sciences.

The Department of Environmental, Earth & Atmospheric Sciences offers a PhD in Earth Systems Science and an MS in Environmental Geoscience. The PhD is a new program and the catalog is currently being updated to reflect these changes. For information on the department and the programs:
