- Graduate Position
The lab of Dr. Emma (Mickey) MacKie is seeking two PhD students to conduct research in geophysical glaciology at the University of Florida (UF). The Gator Glaciology Lab focuses on the development and application of machine learning tools, particularly geostatistical simulation, for studying subglacial conditions and their effect on ice sheet behavior. Areas of research include geophysical data analysis, geostatistical simulation methods, subglacial hydrological modeling, and the synthesis of geological and geophysical knowledge. There are opportunities for fieldwork in Svalbard. See https://geology.ufl.edu/programs/graduate-program/prospective-graduate-students/ and https://www.gatorglaciology.com/ for more details on the department and group. With the recent launch of UF’s artificial intelligence initiative, the hiring of over 100 machine learning faculty, and the high-performance computing partnership with NVIDIA, UF is an ideal place for students wishing to conduct research involving machine learning. Linear algebra and previous programming experience are preferred.
The lab is located in Gainesville, north central Florida. Gainesville is an hour from the beach and is known for its football games, nightlife, and music scene. The Gainesville area offers many outdoor activities including swimming with manatees, kayaking, bird (and gator) watching, and enjoying the many freshwater springs.
Applications are due on January 15, 2023
