Nearly every aspect of the Polar Regions are changing rapidly due to climate change, yet the scientific community has only begun to uncover the dynamics, sensitivities and global importance of these regions. The urgency for interdisciplinary as well as international approaches to scientific investigation is more critical now than ever before. Current and future polar researchers face the challenges to conduct transformative research to advance our understanding of polar systems, as well as effectively communicate these results to students, policy makers, and the global society.

From 4-11 May 2008, the New Generation of Polar Researchers (NGPR) Symposium brought together a select group of early career polar researchers from various personal and professional backgrounds across the spectrum of social, natural and physical sciences. This diverse and ambitious group spent an intensive week learning from each other and mentors many important aspects of IPY science, communication, outreach, polar history and managing careers in interdisciplinary and international research.

A select goup of mentors also shared insights, stories and expertise in overcoming obstacles young researchers face, including comparisons of polar research from the 1st IPY (1882-1883) through the IGY to the current IPY. This provided a continuum of polar science knowledge and a sense of history that will carry these young leaders forward to IPY 5 in 2032-2033.

The NGPR symposium is also part of the larger IPY at University of the Arctic and collaborates closely with the Association of Polar Early Career Scientists.
