SUMMARY:Multidisciplinary workshop on snow research in Svalbard (online)
LOCATION:online
DESCRIPTION:
The long awaited multidisciplinary SIOS workshop on snow researc
h in Svalbard will be held online 1-3 & 5 February. Registration is fre
e and now open! Join us for 4 exciting mornings with focus on snow observat
ions and research, technology development and many other topics.</
p>
Snow covers all of Svalbard for up to nine months and affects all sphe
res of the Earth System. However, we still lack a holistic picture of snow
processes and need to develop tools to monitor these processes, and assess
risks associated with snow.

This workshop aims to bring together peop
le from different disciplines and backgrounds during 4 half-day sessions in
order to develop specific targeted initiatives related to snow science in
Svalbard. The focus will be on activities that provide answers to snow rela
ted science questions, with focus on activities that

help integr
ate cross-disciplinary studies*

help to develop technologies that c
an be used to address the above

develop data management and metadat
a creation processes that ensure proper archiving, dissemination, and commu
nication

* Currently, topics include snow physics and remot
e sensing, snow chemistry (aerosols), and the need for standardised paramet
ers as well as field data for modelling parameterisation. We hope that expe
rts also from other fields will join the workshop in order to contribute to
a comprehensive research agenda on snow research in Svalbard.

T
he workshop will comprise two sections, (1) drafting of a research
agenda for snow research in Svalbard, and (2) discussions
on technology development in the area of snow physics, and will in
clude panel discussions, selected short scientific talks, discussions in br
eak-out groups, and writing sessions on the research agenda draft. Extra ti
me will be allocated for discussions on other relevant topics (community-ba
sed observations, data management solutions, etc.).

Where?</s
trong> Online (Zoom)

When? 1st –
3rd (9:00 – 13:00 CET) and 5th (9:00 – 11:30 CET) Feb
ruary 2021

Who is invited?

Scien
tists from all disciplines affected by snow and local stakeholders in Svalb
ard

Engineers and enterprises interested in the development of scie
ntific sensors and technology suitable for measuring physical snow properti
es under Arctic conditions.
