SUMMARY:16th International Swiss Climate Summer School 2017 “High-resolution climate: observations, models and projections"
LOCATION:Ascona\, Switzerland
DESCRIPTION:
The Swiss Climate Research, the network of leading Swiss institutions in
climate research and education, invites young scientists to join high-prof
ile climate researchers on the occasion of the 16th International Swiss Cli
mate Summer School 2017.

With the advent of satellites and high-perfo
rmance computing, the resolution of climate information is dramatically inc
reasing. This development is of critical importance from scientific and soc
ietal points of view. It will improve the representation of key processes,
weather systems and extreme events; reduce uncertainties in climate project
ions; and facilitate the use of climate information for mitigation and adap
tation measures.

Topics covered will include:

What observa
tional methodologies provide high-resolution data?

How suitable are
current global and regional climate models for high-resolution application
?

What is the role of high resolution in representing extreme event
s such as heat waves, droughts, windstorms and floods?

How can we e
xploit the highly parallel and heterogeneous hardware architectures of emer
ging generations of high-performance supercomputers?

How can high-r
esolution information be used to inform decision processes in the context o
f a changing climate?

The courses cover a broad spectrum of cut
ting-edge climate research and foster cross-disciplinary links. Each topic
includes keynote plenary lectures and workshops with in-depth discussion in
smaller groups. All Summer School participants are expected to present a p
oster of their research. There will be ample opportunity for discussion. Th
e Summer School is open to young researchers (PhD students and Post-Docs) w
orldwide from all fields of climate research. Participation is highly compe
titive and will be limited to a maximum of 70.

Further information ab
out the Summer School and the application procedure can be found in the att
ached flyer or visit the website ww
w.climateresearch.ch

Application deadline: 31 December 20
16.

Contact and information: <span id="cloak45caca0f39fd1a4d
