SUMMARY: APECS-ARICE webinar: DEARice in MOSAiC – Connecting the world of snow, ice and ecosystem processes
LOCATION:Online
DESCRIPTION:APECS (www.apecs.is (http://www.apecs.is/)) and ARICE (www.arice.eu (http:/
/www.arice.eu/)) invites for a webinar on the project DEARice (DEvelopment
of snow/ice/ecosystem models using winter-to-summer ARctic observations of
coupled snow, ice, and ecosystem processes) on 4 June 2021 from 8:00 – 09:3
0 am GMT.\nThe ARICE (EU FP7) supported DEARice project (DEvelopment of sno
w/ice/ecosystem models using winter-to-summer ARctic observations of couple
d snow, ice, and ecosystem processes) took part during the MOSAiC expeditio
n. The aim was to collect unique data on snow and sea ice over a full year
to improve our process-level understanding of processes that can eventually
feed into the improvement of models. The COVID-19 pandemic caused substant
ial changes in the leg planning after April 2020, however, the resulting da
ta set is very close to the optimal outcome. Serendipitous luck made it pos
sible to sample snow for all four seasons, including the mysterious summer
“snow”, called surface scattering layer. The results from this project enco
mpass all relevant spatial scales, from microstructural processes in the sn
owpack and at the ice surface, to ridge scale observations of snow distribu
tion and ice thickness, to snow-atmosphere interactions and albedo processe
s of the sea ice cover. Understanding how these different scales interact w
ill improve our understanding of the vulnerability of the Arctic sea ice sy
stem, and decrease uncertainties in climate projections.\nSpeakers are Mart
in Schneebeli (WSL Institute for Snow and Avalanche Research SLF), Ruzica D
adic (Victoria University of Wellington), Mats Granskog (Norwegian Polar In
stitute), Polona Itkin (UiT - The Arctic University of Norway), Jari Haapal
a (Finnish Meteorological Institute), Roberta Pirazzini (Finnish Meteorolog
ical Institute) and Hannula Henna-Reetta (Finnish Meteorological Institute)
\nModeration: Franziska Pausch (ARICE, AWI & APECS)\nTo join the webina
r, please register via this link (https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/
WN_6PVgc0zqSaqaioGKIDnCbA) and you will receive the link to the webinar aft
erwards.\n
