SUMMARY:Regional Sea Level Changes and Coastal Impacts
LOCATION:Columbia University\, New-York (NY) - USA
DESCRIPTION:Sea level change is already impacting coastal communities globally and will
continue to do so. To meet urgent societal needs for useful information on
sea level, the World Climate Research Program (WCRP) has established the t
heme “Regional Sea-Level Change and Coastal Impacts”, as one of its cross-c
utting “Grand Challenge” (GC) science questions.\nThe GC Sea Level has desi
gned and developed an integrated interdisciplinary program on sea level res
earch reaching from the global to the regional and coastal scales. In parti
cular, the program aims for close interaction with relevant coastal stakeho
lders to make sure that the results effectively support impact and adaptati
on efforts and wider coastal zone development and management.\nThe WCRP, jo
intly with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC),
is organizing an international conference on sea level research that will a
ddress the existing challenges in describing and predicting regional sea le
vel changes, and in quantifying the intrinsic uncertainties. It follows 11
years after the first WCRP sea level conference (Paris, 2006), and three ye
ars after the last Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Clim
ate Change (IPCC). It will provide a comprehensive summary of the state of
worldwide climate-related large scale sea level research.\nThe conference i
s a 5-day event with a leading theme guiding the activities of each day. Th
e structure of the conference will consist of plenary sessions followed by
extensive poster sessions. In the evenings we are planning to hold "think-t
anks" focusing on new science frontiers and activities.\nABSTRACT SUBMISISO
 N DEADLINE EXTENSION\nNEW DEADLINE: 28th February 2017\nThe WCRP/IOC Sea Le
vel Conference, which will be held in New York, NY (USA) and hosted by The
Earth Institute, Columbia University, on July 10-14, 2017, had a very good
response from the scientific community during the abstract submission perio
 d. Many excellent contributions have been received from around the world, a
nd from a diverse community. Due to technical issues during the last few da
ys with the online submission system, the deadline for abstract submissions
has been extended to February 28th, 2017. We encourage our colleagues from
all nations to submit their abstracts and we are looking forward to seeing
them at the conference.\nTo submit your abstract and for more details, vis
it the conference website: http://www.sealevel2017.org\nThe deadline for re
quests for travel support has also been extended to 28th February 2017. In
case you want to apply for travel support, this can be done during the abst
ract submission process.\nIf you have any questions during this process, do
not hesitate to contact us at This email address is being protected from s
