SUMMARY:2021 WAIS Workshop - Registration and abstract submission open
LOCATION:Online/Sterling\, Virginia
DESCRIPTION:
A hybrid 2021 WAIS Workshop&nb
sp;is scheduled for September 20-23 at The Algonkian in Sterling,
Virginia with an option to participate virtually. The meeting, sponsor
ed by NSF and NASA, hosts transdisciplinary and societally relevant science
focused on marine ice-sheet and adjacent Earth systems, with particular em
phasis on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

The meeting will follow a similar format as past meetings with each t
opical session followed by panel discussions. As we have done in recent yea
rs, the meeting will include a community health session as well as an optio
nal mentoring program for early-career scientists. Prior to the start of th
e workshop on the evening of September 20, all interested attendees are wel
come to participate in an icebreaker dinner and Steering Committee meeting
to discuss the future of WAIS Workshops and relevant community issues.

***

Registration and abstract
submission for the hybrid 2021 WAIS Workshop is now open. You can
find the registration link and all
the workshop details at the 2021 WAIS Workshop website. P
lease read the website for details about this year’s hybrid meeting.

Space for in-person participants will be limit
ed more than usual depending on evolving venue policies, and on-site lodgin
g is even further limited. Nearly 50% of the 128 survey respondents
indicated interest in participating entirely or partially in-person</stron
g>. If you want to participate in-person, register as soon as possible to a
void being placed on a waitlist.

<
strong>The deadline for abstract submission is July 30, and the deadline to
register for the workshop is August 23. You may register before s
ubmitting your abstract. The abstract portal will require a tit
le, co-author information, and a ≤500-word abstract. We also will offer tra
vel and registration fee support for some students and early career researc
hers, with a preference for those who submit an abstract. <a href="https://

upport are due on July 30. We define early-career researchers as students,
postdocs or those no more than 5 years from obtaining a PhD. Abstract and e
arly-career support decisions will be announced mid-August.

***

The NSF- a
nd NASA-sponsored WAIS Workshop is a transdisciplinary conference focused o
n marine ice-sheets and adjacent Earth systems, with a particular emphasis
on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The Workshop hosts talks and posters from
a diversity of fields, including glaciology, oceanography, atmospheric scie
nce, biology, data science, computer science, and engineering, in order to
capture the full breadth of the marine ice-sheet system in order to constra
in the past, present, and future state of West Antarctica. We also encourag
e researchers studying processes and geographic regions elsewhere in Antarc
tica and other glaciated regions of our planet. This year’s session include
:

· &
nbsp; Piecing the puzzle together: Multi-disciplinary, integr
ative science in West Antarctica - New research and scientific dis
coveries that bridge several disciplines in support of big-picture, scienti
fic pursuits in West Antarctica, such as atmosphere-ice-ocean-bed-ecosystem
interactions, linkages of surface and basal processes, modern-day connecti
ons with the paleo record, and more.

·&n
bsp; Beyond MISI: Novel i
nsights into Antarctic ice sheet processes - New investigations in
to ice sheet processes, such as basal and grounding line processes, ice she
lf stability, crevasses and fracture, processes that results in large ice m
ass loss such as MICI, surface mass balance, firn processes, and extraordin
ary snow events and atmospheric rivers.

· Marine ice sheet
sensitivity in the Earth system - Research that highlights and/or
integrates understanding of ice sheet response to past, present, and future
climate, marine, ice-dynamic and biogeochemical systems, including, but no
t limited to, studies of ice cores, sediment cores, geology, topography, ge
omorphology, and numerical models.
<p style="text-align: justify;"

  for West Antarctic science.

· &nbs
p; WAIS in the community: Civic
engagement & co-production of deliverables - We are seeking c

l parties involved, as well as contributions that promote the development o
f inclusive and equitable research and learning spaces.

Within the science session programming, we will have a comm
unity health session focused on mental wellness in academic and research en

e mental wellness amongst the WAIS community (and beyond) and develop suppo
rtive community structures for well-being.
<p style="text-align: j

, and we are committed to creating and maintaining a workshop environment t
