SUMMARY:2021 WAIS Workshop - Registration and abstract submission open
LOCATION:Online/Sterling\, Virginia
DESCRIPTION:A hybrid 2021 WAIS Workshop is scheduled for September 20-23 at The Algonki
an in Sterling, Virginia with an option to participate virtually. The meeti
ng, sponsored by NSF and NASA, hosts transdisciplinary and societally relev
ant science focused on marine ice-sheet and adjacent Earth systems, with pa
rticular emphasis on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. \nThe meeting will follo
w a similar format as past meetings with each topical session followed by p
anel discussions. As we have done in recent years, the meeting will include
a community health session as well as an optional mentoring program for ea
rly-career scientists. Prior to the start of the workshop on the evening of
September 20, all interested attendees are welcome to participate in an ic
ebreaker dinner and Steering Committee meeting to discuss the future of WAI
S Workshops and relevant community issues. \n***\nRegistration and abstract
submission for the hybrid 2021 WAIS Workshop is now open. You can find the
  registration link (https://mines.eventsair.com/22gp1120a/waisregistration/
Site/Register) and all the workshop details at the 2021 WAIS
Workshop website. Please read the website for details about this year’s
hybrid meeting.\nSpace for in-person participants will be limited more tha
n usual depending on evolving venue policies, and on-site lodging is even f
urther limited. Nearly 50% of the 128 survey respondents indicated interest
in participating entirely or partially in-person. If you want to participa
te in-person, register as soon as possible to avoid being placed on a waitl
ist. \nThe deadline for abstract submission is July 30, and the deadline to
register for the workshop is August 23. You may register before submitting
your abstract. The abstract portal (https://mines.eventsair.com/Presentati
onPortal/Account/Login?ReturnUrl=%2FPresentationPortal%2F22gp1120a%2Fabstra
cts) will require a title, co-author information, and a ≤500-word abstract.
We also will offer travel and registration fee support for some students a
nd early career researchers, with a preference for those who submit an abst
ract. <a href="https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScY_fWI2wx0m8c45RV0

lications for ECR support are due on July 30. We define early-career re
searchers as students, postdocs or those no more than 5 years from obtainin
g a PhD. Abstract and early-career support decisions will be announced mid-
August. \n***\nThe NSF- and NASA-sponsored WAIS Workshop is a transdiscipli
nary conference focused on marine ice-sheets and adjacent Earth systems, wi
th a particular emphasis on the West Antarctic Ice Sheet. The Workshop host
s talks and posters from a diversity of fields, including glaciology, ocean
ography, atmospheric science, biology, data science, computer science, and
engineering, in order to capture the full breadth of the marine ice-sheet s
ystem in order to constrain the past, present, and future state of West Ant
arctica. We also encourage researchers studying processes and geographic re
gions elsewhere in Antarctica and other glaciated regions of our planet. Th
is year’s session include:\n· Piecing the puzzle together: Multi-di
sciplinary, integrative science in West Antarctica - New research and scien
tific discoveries that bridge several disciplines in support of big-picture
, scientific pursuits in West Antarctica, such as atmosphere-ice-ocean-bed-
ecosystem interactions, linkages of surface and basal processes, modern-day
connections with the paleo record, and more.\n· Beyond MISI: Novel
insights into Antarctic ice sheet processes - New investigations into ice
sheet processes, such as basal and grounding line processes, ice shelf stab
ility, crevasses and fracture, processes that results in large ice mass los
s such as MICI, surface mass balance, firn processes, and extraordinary sno
w events and atmospheric rivers.\n· Marine ice sheet sensitivity in
the Earth system - Research that highlights and/or integrates understandin
g of ice sheet response to past, present, and future climate, marine, ice-d
ynamic and biogeochemical systems, including, but not limited to, studies o
f ice cores, sediment cores, geology, topography, geomorphology, and numeri
cal models. \n· Greetings from the future: Innovations in observing
and modeling techniques - New boundary conditions, empirical and modeling
techniques, Operation IceBridge, ICESat-2, GRACE, GRACE-FO, NISAR, Sentinel
, and data science applications for West Antarctic science.\n· WAIS
in the community: Civic engagement & co-production of deliverables - W
e are seeking contributions that provide insight on and examples of civic e
ngagement and co-production of deliverables with people both inside and out
side the confines of academic and research institutions that are mutually b
eneficial to all parties involved, as well as contributions that promote th
e development of inclusive and equitable research and learning spaces.\nWit
hin the science session programming, we will have a community health sessio
n focused on mental wellness in academic and research environments led by a
n expert speaker. Our goal for this session is to promote mental wellness a
mongst the WAIS community (and beyond) and develop supportive community str
uctures for well-being. \nDiversity, equity, and inclusion are embraced at
the WAIS Workshop, and we are committed to creating and maintaining a works
hop environment that is safe, inclusive, and welcoming to all genders, race
s, identities, self-expressions, ethnicities and cultures. Please contact t
