Change, conformity and practi
ces of resistance in the “cold world”
(workshop in En
glish language)
Arctic and suba rctic societies have been going through fundamental social and cultural tra nsformations throughout the last centuries. Colonialism, state encroachment , new spatial orders, economic development and imported technologies heavil y affected circumpolar societies, but similarly created opportunities for a lternate forms of belonging and identity. Cultural change produced a divers ity of novel everyday practices that enmeshed indigenous as well as non-ind igenous (newcomers) people of the North in trans-regional and international networks.
This workshop invites t
o think about historic and contemporary cases, where socio-economic, infras
tructural and cultural transformations evoked multiple forms of belonging i
n the interconnected and complex landscape of collective political and cult
ural identities. We aim to provide a thematically broad insight into the so
cial realities of circumpolar societies, to theoretically address trans-reg
ional commonalities and differences in the North.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to: colonial legacy, regional development, infrastructural change, infor
mal networks, gender, art and cultural revitalization, indigenous and indus
trial economies, human-environment interaction, multiple identities, and gl
obal interconnections.
