DESCRIPTION:<p>The first <strong>field-school</strong> of the International Partnership
s for Excellent Education and Research (INTPART) project titled, <strong>"A
rctic Field Summer Schools: Norway-Canada-USA collaboration"</strong> will
be organized by University of Tromso (UiT) - the Arctic University of Norwa
 y and will convene <strong>15 May-2 June 2017</strong>.</p><p>The “Arctic F
ield Summer School” is funded by the Research Council of Norway (NFR) and N

n among UiT-the Arctic University of Norway, International Arctic Research
Center (IARC) of the University of Alaska Fairbanks (UAF), USA and Universi
ty of Calgary (UC), Canada. Through a series of summer schools, the project
will engage graduate students in exploring science questions related to Ar
ctic challenges.</p><p>During this first Norwegian Field School, students w
ill participate in a remote sensing and ship-based field school at Svalbard
and Tromsø. The course is divided in two closely related segments, startin
g with a one-week field course on board R/V Lance to the marginal ice zone
in and around Svalbard, where the participating students will receive intro
ductory lectures and collect in-situ and remote sensing data to be analyzed
in the subsequent segment.</p><p>The second week will take place at the Ce
ntre for Integrated Remote Sensing and Forecasting for Arctic Operations (C
IRFA), located within the Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of
Physics and Technology at UiT-the Arctic University of Norway. This part of
the course will cover analysis of data collected in the field and addition
al archived data. The participating students will have to submit an individ
ual report or an oral presentation at the end of the school, and will be ab
le to earn credits for participation based on an assessment of the work.</p
 ><p>The class will be offered as a two-credit University of Alaska Fairbank
s (UAF) summer course and students willing to earn credits need to enroll f
or the class.</p><p>Travel grants (amounts will be determined later) will b
e issued by IARC to cover round-trip international travel costs from USA to
Tromsø, Norway, as well as travel between Tromsø and Svalbard. Accommodati
on and meals are provided free of cost for the participant on board the shi
p R/V Lance. All meals and standard university accommodation will be covere
d during the stay in Tromsø. CIRFA will provide office space and other basi
c infrastructure at the centre facilities at UiT-the Arctic University of N
orway.</p><p><strong>Important:</strong> This opportunity is open only for
US-based graduate students enrolled at US universities.</p><p>Please send y
our 1-page motivation letter that outlines how this course fits into your g
raduate study and career plans, curriculum vitae and a recommendation lette
