DESCRIPTION:The first field-school of the International Partnerships for Excellent Educ
 ation and Research (INTPART) project titled, "Arctic Field Summer Schools: 
 Norway-Canada-USA collaboration" will be organized by University of Tromso 
 (UiT) - the Arctic University of Norway and will convene 15 May-2 June 2017
 .\nThe “Arctic Field Summer School” is funded by the Research Council of No
 rway (NFR) and Norwegian Centre for International Cooperation in Education 
 (SIU), under grant agreement number 261786/H30 (http://cirfa.uit.no/intpart

 roject-to-cirfa-arctic-field-summer-school)).\nThe project supports researc
 h and education collaboration among UiT-the Arctic University of Norway, In
 ternational Arctic Research Center (IARC) of the University of Alaska Fairb
 anks (UAF), USA and University of Calgary (UC), Canada. Through a series of
  summer schools, the project will engage graduate students in exploring sci
 ence questions related to Arctic challenges.\nDuring this first Norwegian F
 ield School, students will participate in a remote sensing and ship-based f
 ield school at Svalbard and Tromsø. The course is divided in two closely re
 lated segments, starting with a one-week field course on board R/V Lance to
  the marginal ice zone in and around Svalbard, where the participating stud
 ents will receive introductory lectures and collect in-situ and remote sens
 ing data to be analyzed in the subsequent segment.\nThe second week will ta
 ke place at the Centre for Integrated Remote Sensing and Forecasting for Ar
 ctic Operations (CIRFA), located within the Faculty of Science and Technolo
 gy, Department of Physics and Technology at UiT-the Arctic University of No
 rway. This part of the course will cover analysis of data collected in the 
 field and additional archived data. The participating students will have to
  submit an individual report or an oral presentation at the end of the scho
 ol, and will be able to earn credits for participation based on an assessme
 nt of the work.\nThe class will be offered as a two-credit University of Al
 aska Fairbanks (UAF) summer course and students willing to earn credits nee
 d to enroll for the class.\nTravel grants (amounts will be determined later
 ) will be issued by IARC to cover round-trip international travel costs fro
 m USA to Tromsø, Norway, as well as travel between Tromsø and Svalbard. Acc
 ommodation and meals are provided free of cost for the participant on board
  the ship R/V Lance. All meals and standard university accommodation will b
 e covered during the stay in Tromsø. CIRFA will provide office space and ot
 her basic infrastructure at the centre facilities at UiT-the Arctic Univers
