SUMMARY:PhD Summer Course - Methodology and legal science within the international Law of the Sea

DESCRIPTION:<p>The K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS) is arranging a <st
 rong>summer course for PhD students in Tromsø, 15 - 16 June 2017.</strong><
 br />The closing date for applications is <strong>Monday 3 April</strong>.<
 /p><p>The course covers methodological aspects of both legal and multi-/int
 erdisciplinary research of relevance to doctoral research in the law of the
  sea.<br />The course will train the students on the sources of internation
 al law, their interpretation, and the relationship between formal sources o
 f international law, such as the Law of the Sea Convention, and other norma
 tive instruments, such as the often non-legally binding decisions adopted b
 y international organizations, like the IMO and OSPAR. Also covered are the
  relationship between the law of the sea and other branches of internationa
 l law such as international environmental law and trade law, and the role o
 f other disciplines in research related to the law of the sea.<br />The cou
 rse covers topics that are of direct relevance to individual students’ doct
 oral projects and the students should be able to refine their research ques
 tions as well as develop the analytical framework for their research projec
 ts.</p><p>This is a two-day course with obligatory attendance which require
 s literature studies and the writing of a draft essay in advance. The draft
  essay must be presented during the course. Active participation is require
 d, meaning that all students must try to link the various subjects discusse
 d to their own projects, and give an account of this. During the course the
 re are lectures, essay presentations and discussions.</p><p>The essay draft
  will be discussed during the course and must be finalized after the course
 <br />and handed in on a date set by the Faculty. The essay must focus on i
 ssues that are of relevance to the themes of the course.</p><p>The course i
 s designed for students who have been admitted to the doctoral programme fo
 r legal science. There is a maximum of 20 seats.</p><p>For full program des
