SUMMARY:PhD Summer Course - Methodology and legal science within the international Law of the Sea

DESCRIPTION:The K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea (JCLOS) is arranging a summer
  course for PhD students in Tromsø, 15 - 16 June 2017.\nThe closing date fo
 r applications is Monday 3 April.\nThe course covers methodological aspects
  of both legal and multi-/interdisciplinary research of relevance to doctor
 al research in the law of the sea.\nThe course will train the students on t
 he sources of international law, their interpretation, and the relationship
  between formal sources of international law, such as the Law of the Sea Co
 nvention, and other normative instruments, such as the often non-legally bi
 nding decisions adopted by international organizations, like the IMO and OS
 PAR. Also covered are the relationship between the law of the sea and other
  branches of international law such as international environmental law and 
 trade law, and the role of other disciplines in research related to the law
  of the sea.\nThe course covers topics that are of direct relevance to indi
 vidual students’ doctoral projects and the students should be able to refin
 e their research questions as well as develop the analytical framework for 
 their research projects.\nThis is a two-day course with obligatory attendan
 ce which requires literature studies and the writing of a draft essay in ad
 vance. The draft essay must be presented during the course. Active particip
 ation is required, meaning that all students must try to link the various s
 ubjects discussed to their own projects, and give an account of this. Durin
 g the course there are lectures, essay presentations and discussions.\nThe 
 essay draft will be discussed during the course and must be finalized after
  the course\nand handed in on a date set by the Faculty. The essay must foc
 us on issues that are of relevance to the themes of the course.\nThe course
  is designed for students who have been admitted to the doctoral programme
