SUMMARY:2nd Summer School on Sea Level Change
LOCATION:TU Delft campus\, Delft\, The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:
TU Delft Climate Institute
Summer School o
n “Sea-level change: observations, processes and modelling”

Date: 28 August – 1 September 2017.

Venue: TU Delft campus, Delft, The Netherlands.

Goal: This Summer School will provide
Ph.D. students and junior scientists specializing in sea level research wi
th a basic introduction to the dynamics of current and future sea level cha
nge and to state-of-the-art tools to measure and project it. The different
contributors to global and regional sea level change will be presented by w
orld-leading experts. The School has a strong component on “hands-on” learn
ing, with practical exercises on the observation and modelling of sea level
change, its contributors, and forcing mechanisms. Participants will also r
eceive a training on science communication.

<e
m>Scope: This Summer School will cover the most important phy
sical processes contributing to sea level change. The main focus is on the
dynamics of these processes, how they are modelled, what the available cons
traints and current model limitations are, and how they are used for sea le
vel projections.

Lecturers:
Francisco Calafat (NOC), Roland Gehrels (University of York), Svetlana Jevr
ejeva (NOC), Anders Levermann (PIK), Ben Marzeion (University of Bremen), T
ony Payne (University of Bristol), Alvaro Santamaría-Gómez (University of T
oulouse), Aimée Slangen (NIOZ), Sierd de Vries (TUD), Marc Naeije (TUD), Wo
uter van der Wal (TUD), Riccardo Riva (TUD, convenor) and Miren Vizcaino (T
UD, convenor).

Synthetic programme
Day
1 – The sea level record; student presentations and case studies.
Day
2 – The Solid Earth contribution; field trip to the Sand Motor.
Day 3
 – Glaciers and ice sheets; computer exercises with an ice sheet model.
Day 4 – The oceans; computer exercises with the Broad Radar Altimetry Too
l (BRAT).
Day 5 – Global climate and sea level; workshop on public com
munication of climate science.

Practical information</str
ong>
The school is open to PhD students and junior post-doc resea
rchers working on sea-level related subjects. The registration fee is EUR 4
00 and includes full board, excursion and course material (EUR 200 without
accommodation). There are 30 places available.
To register, please sen
