SUMMARY:2nd Summer School on Sea Level Change
LOCATION:TU Delft campus\, Delft\, The Netherlands
DESCRIPTION:TU Delft Climate Institute\nSummer School on “Sea-level change: observation
 s, processes and modelling”\nDate: 28 August – 1 September 2017.\nVenue: TU
Delft campus, Delft, The Netherlands.\n\nGoal: This Summer School will pro
vide Ph.D. students and junior scientists specializing in sea level researc
h with a basic introduction to the dynamics of current and future sea level
change and to state-of-the-art tools to measure and project it. The differ
ent contributors to global and regional sea level change will be presented
by world-leading experts. The School has a strong component on “hands-on” l
earning, with practical exercises on the observation and modelling of sea l
evel change, its contributors, and forcing mechanisms. Participants will al
so receive a training on science communication.\n\nScope: This Summer Schoo
l will cover the most important physical processes contributing to sea leve
l change. The main focus is on the dynamics of these processes, how they ar
e modelled, what the available constraints and current model limitations ar
e, and how they are used for sea level projections.\n\nLecturers: Francisco
Calafat (NOC), Roland Gehrels (University of York), Svetlana Jevrejeva (NO
C), Anders Levermann (PIK), Ben Marzeion (University of Bremen), Tony Payne
(University of Bristol), Alvaro Santamaría-Gómez (University of Toulouse),
Aimée Slangen (NIOZ), Sierd de Vries (TUD), Marc Naeije (TUD), Wouter van
der Wal (TUD), Riccardo Riva (TUD, convenor) and Miren Vizcaino (TUD, conve
nor).\nSynthetic programme\nDay 1 – The sea level record; student presentat
ions and case studies.\nDay 2 – The Solid Earth contribution; field trip to
the Sand Motor.\nDay 3 – Glaciers and ice sheets; computer exercises with
an ice sheet model.\nDay 4 – The oceans; computer exercises with the Broad
Radar Altimetry Tool (BRAT).\nDay 5 – Global climate and sea level; worksho
 p on public communication of climate science.\nPractical information\nThe s
chool is open to PhD students and junior post-doc researchers working on se
a-level related subjects. The registration fee is EUR 400 and includes full
board, excursion and course material (EUR 200 without accommodation). Ther
e are 30 places available.\nTo register, please send an e-mail to This emai
