SUMMARY:IGS British Branch 2017, ECR Training Event: Environmental Data Science for Polar Scientists
LOCATION:Lancaster Post-graduate Statistics Centre
DESCRIPTION:Lancaster Data Science Institute are hosting a one-day training course on T
uesday September 5th in conjunction with the International Glaciological So
ciety British Branch 2017 meeting. Quantitative analysis relies on numerica
l methods, however methodological developments in the ‘data sciences’ (e.g.
maths/computing) are not often brought directly into polar research. This
training event aims to encourage the adoption of cutting-edge data science
methods by polar researchers. The day will provide an overview of statistic
al and computational methods which can be employed by polar scientists and
will deliver in-depth practical sessions on the application of changepoint
analysis and extreme value theory to polar data. There will also be an oppo
rtunity to develop ideas around the application of data science techniques
to your own data with feedback given by Lancaster's experts in Environmenta
l Data Science. The course also offers the opportunity to develop skills in
analysis using R, and working in a cloud-based environment, through the pr
actical components of the course.\nThe workshop will be held from 09:00 – 1
7:45 on Tuesday 5th September in Lancaster Post-graduate Statistics Centre.
Note that this is the day preceding the British Branch 2017 meeting.\nRegi
stration is free via the eventbrite link below, but places are limited; pri
ority will be given to PhD students but other early career researchers are
encouraged to apply. For those arriving the day before (Monday 4th Septembe
 r), on-campus en-suite B and B accommodation has been reserved at a cost of
£38.50 per night.\nPrior knowledge of R is not required, but attendees sho
uld have a basic statistical awareness, for example an understanding of lin
ear regression and the concept of a probability distribution. If you have a
ny questions please contact Amber on This email address is being protected
