Scoping Workshop of Knowledge-Action Network (KAN) on “Emergent Risks and Extreme Events – Reducing Disaster Risks under Environmental Chan ge –“
Objectives:
Disasters continue t
o rise both in developing and in industrialized countries. This is the dire
ct result of environmental events that are extreme or that have extreme imp
acts on economic, health, infrastructure, social, and other systems. Howeve
r, there is a fundamental lack of understanding of integrated human, ecolog
ical, and physical processes shaping risk cascades and feedbacks in the con
text of the Anthropocene. Multi-hazard interactions and cascading impacts i
ncluding those involving technological hazards and social/political impacts
are recognized but not yet supported by a systematic science agenda. The f
ull solution space for disaster risk reduction includes reflection and redi
rection of development priorities, practices and trajectories in the contex
t of global environmental change.
This Knowledge-Action Network
(KAN) on Emergent Risks and Extreme Events aims to define an interaction ne
twork between science partners and wider stakeholders to allow a structured
integration and synthesis of expertise, professional and local knowledge t
o accelerate action on multi-hazard and compound events and so to support a
transformation of development towards an equitable, sustainable and resili
ent future. Scoping workshop aims to discuss on possible research prioritie
s, practical collaboration and engagement of stakeholders in the research t
hemes and near-term governance of the KAN.
