Since the introduction of plastic materials in the 1950s, global production has increased more than 500 times. Evidenc e of plastic debris in both Polar Oceans suggests that they have already sp read across the world, and are thus recognized as one of the most important worldwide threats for oceans. However, while there has been a great deal o f research into plastic pollution in the more populated regions of the worl d, little is known about the Polar regions. This is an emerging and timely area of research which necessitates a co-ordinated scientific focus.

The aim of the workshop is to initiate a SCAR Plastic Action Group to:

  1. Collate in formation on plastic pollution in the Antarctic and Arctic regions.
  2. Assess occurrence, distribution, source and fate of plastics (nano, micro and macro) in Polar regions.
  3. Estimate current levels of pollution i n the poles and evaluate the impact on the ecosystem.
  4. Generate a Be st Practice protocol for plastic collection and analysis in the Polar regio ns.

The workshop is open to scient ists from different disciplines with interest in the processes regulating t he distribution, magnitude and ecosystem impact of plastic debris in Polar environments. Experts on marine plastic debris policy change and mitigation are also welcome.
