and the Russian V.I. Vernadsky and Nongovernemental Ecological Foundation.
Background
Global change has triggered a numbe
r of environmental changes, such as alterations in climate, land productivi
ty, water resources, atmospheric chemistry, and ecological systems. Finding
solutions to the impact of global
change is one of the most important
challenges of the 21st century.
The observatory TERENO (TERrestrial E
Nvironmental Observatories) is embarking on new paths with an interdiscipli
nary and long-term research programme. TERENO spans an Earth observation ne
twork across Germany that extends from the North German lowlands to the Bav
arian Alps. This unique large-scale project aims to catalogue the long-term
ecological, social and economic impact of global change at regional level.
In Germany the northeastern lowlands are one of the regions most affe
cted by climate change. The regional TERENO observatory „Northeastern Germa
n Lowland“ operated by the GFZ, analyses the impact of climate and land-use
change on terrestrial ecosystems and serves as a platform for the monitori
ng, analysis and prediction of changing environmental conditions.
