SUMMARY:APECS Turkey Workshop on Education & Outreach
LOCATION:Istanbul\, Turkey
DESCRIPTION:APECS Turkey was founded in 2013 by Dr. Burcu Ozsoy (Director of ITU PolReC
) In 2015 Turkish Students’ Polar Research Team (PolSTeam) was founded to h
ave organic body with APECS Turkey. Since that time APECS Turkey is a growi
ng family with undergraduate and graduate students plus public’s involvemen
t.\nAPECS Turkey has a big E&O program, executed by PolSTeam members. D
uring one-year period, APECS Turkey members usually visit about 30-60 prima
ry, middle and high schools, make age orientated presentations about climat
e change and polar regions. Also APECS Turkey members organize public event
and surveys.\nTo reach more children, we did teach 150 science teachers al
l around the Turkey and around half of those teachers founded polar clubs i
n their schools. (60 clubs * 10-20 students/per year) During their club tim
es (1 hour each week for 20 weeks) they follow a curriculum designed and fu
lly filled with sources by APECS Turkey members.\nAnother project, named “E
ducators Supporting Collaboration on Polar Regions Project (ESCoP)”, is sup
ported by ITU PolReC to involve teachers to Arctic and Antarctic expedition
s to improve their knowledge on polar regions and polar science. A national
open call will be opened on August for the educators.\nAdditionally, APECS
Turkey members are working with Ministry of Education to add more climate
and polar issues to national curriculums for all grade students.\nSome of t
he main problems of APECS NCs are funding, structure and reaching children.
As of APECS Turkey, we would like to share our experiences on the topics\n
\n - how APECS Turkey solved some of those difficulties\n - how can we impr
ove the E&O program and adapt to other countries,by hosting you in Ista
