SUMMARY:MOSAiC School 2019
LOCATION:Arctic
DESCRIPTION:\nThe Multidisciplinary drifting Observatory for the Study of Arctic Climat
e (MOSAiC) (https://www.mosaic-expedition.org/), will be the first year-aro
und expedition exploring the coupled Arctic climate system. It has been des
igned by an international consortium of leading polar research institutions
under the umbrella of the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) (h
ttps://iasc.info/), led by the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre f
or Polar and Marine Research (AWI) (https://www.awi.de/), Arctic and Antarc
tic Research Institute (AARI) (http://www.aari.ru/main.php?lg=1) and the Un
iversity of Colorado, Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental S
ciences (CIRES) (https://cires.colorado.edu/).\n\nResearch Vessel (RV) Pola
rstern will spend 350 days (September 2019 until September 2020) frozen int
o the drifting Arctic sea ice. 300 scientists will investigate the Arctic c
limate processes that couple the atmosphere, ocean, sea ice, bio-geochemist
ry and ecosystem. The results of MOSAiC will enhance the understanding of t
he regional and global consequences of Arctic climate change and sea-ice lo
ss, and improve weather and climate predictions.\nDuring the first leg of t
he expedition, the MOSAiC partners and the Association of Polar Early Caree
r Scientists (APECS) (https://www.apecs.is/)work together to offer the MOS
AiC School 2019 on board of the support icebreaker RV Akademik Fedorov.\nDu
 ration of the MOSAiC School 2019:  15 September - 26 October 2019 (plus / m
inus a few days (as logistical or weather conditions may require changes of
travel dates)\nPort of exit and entry:  Tromsø, Norway\nCosts: There will
be no registration fee for the MOSAiC School 2019. The only costs participa
nts will have to cover themselves are the costs of their travel to and from
Tromsø, Norway. Should travel support become available, the MOSAiC School
organizers will contact the selected participants. However, travel support
cannot be guaranteed at this point.\nThe MOSAiC School 2019 will be open to
up to 20 early career researchers (advanced graduate students and PhD stud
ents with no to limited experience with ship-based research).\nInternationa
l experts that are part of the expedition will share knowledge with the stu
dents, engage in discussions and hands-on experiences in groundbreaking res
earch, and thus help to educate future Arctic climate experts. In addition,
the participants will help the MOSAiC Teams on site to set up their instru
ments and experiments.\nAfter the end of the MOSAiC School the participants
will have to:\n\n - serve as MOSAiC “ambassadors” by reporting back to the
ir country and institutes\n - Report to APECS and the MOSAiC organizersFor
information, please visit the MOSAiC School 2019 page (events/upcoming-even
 t-highlights/mosaic-school-2019.html). \n\n \n
