SUMMARY:Arctic Field Summer School 2019: Norway-Canada-USA Collaboration
LOCATION:Whitehorse\, Yukon\, Canada
DESCRIPTION:
The field school is a part of the International Partnerships for Excelle
nce in Education and Research (INTPART) project, Arctic Field Summ
er Schools: Norway-Canada-USA Collaboration.

Through a ser
ies of summer schools, this project engages graduate students in exploring
science questions related to understanding the cryosphere, cryosphere chang
e, and impacts of change on people and ecosystems. Students are exposed to
the use of data derived from remote sensing platforms, as well as airborne
and ground-based sensors and methods.

Specific objectives of the summ
er schools include introduction to and application of cutting-edge approach
es and methods in interdisciplinary remote sensing and field-based research
. In previous years, the field schools have focused on sea ice, lake ice, a
nd snow in the Svalbard area and from NW Alaska. This year the field school
will occur at the Kluane Lake Research Station<
/a> in southwest Yukon, Canada. Efforts will be directed toward field
methods and analysis of data on glaciers and permafrost, and a synthesis of
information from prior schools to produce a state of knowledge assessment
on the impacts of climate change on the cryosphere, ecosystems, and the peo
ple in these areas. The field school will advance the current state of know
ledge and identify emerging issues in cryosphere research, with a focus on
user needs for cryospheric data and information.

This opportunity is
open to U.S.-based graduate students enrolled at U.S. universities. The int
ernational partners will advertise separately.

Application de
