SUMMARY:Arctic Futures Symposium 2016
LOCATION:Brussels\, Belgium
DESCRIPTION:Each year, the Arctic Futures Symposium (AFS) provides a forum for Arctic s
takeholders and high-profile policymakers to conduct well-informed discussi
ons on key topics facing this increasingly important region of the world. T
he AFS promotes open and constructive dialogue allowing emerging issues to
be addressed early and with input from the private and public sector, acade
mia and civil society.\n2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the Arctic Counc
il, a momentous occasion that provides an opportunity for reflection but al
so planning for future success. AFS 2016 will highlight the achievements of
the Arctic Council in its 20-year history, and encourage constructive conv
ersations about the work still to be done to advance environmental protecti
on and sustainable development.\nAFS 2016 also recognizes that the U.S. Cha
irmanship of the Arctic Council will be coming to a close, and that Finland
will move into this role in May 2017. Thus, this year’s forum will advance
sustainable development topics that have been cultivated by the U.S. and w
ill be further advanced by Finland. To this end, sessions will focus on:\n\
n - Arctic Innovation & Sustainability – Leveraging Success and Best Pr
actices\n - Supporting Sustainable Development in Remote Communities\n - Lo
cal Government Capacity and Resiliency\n - Reconciling Tradition, Culture a
nd Modernity\n - Regional Economic Development InitiativesThe theme of “Sus
tainable Communities” emphasizes a long-term goal that Arctic states and th
e international community have to work toward. The AFS 2016 will articulate
a framework for approaching this that can build off best practices, innova
tive solutions, the application of emerging technologies and capacity build
ing efforts within local organizations, governments and processes. Speakers
and attendees will contribute to this vision and the practical application
of tried, true and new ideas.\nExpressions of interest to sponsor, speak a
