With great regret we inform you that the Karthaus course planned for Sep
tember 2020 has to be cancelled. We have discussed the situation with the t
eaching staff, and all agreed that there is no way around it. There are too
many uncertainties concerning the development of the covid-19 crisis, espe
cially with regard to international travel.
We sincerely hope
that the next Karthaus course will be in September 2021.
The course i s meant for Ph.D. students and provides a basic introduction to the dynamic s of glaciers and ice sheets with a focus on ice-climate interactions. Topi cs include: continuum mechanics, kinematics, ice rheology, sliding an d hydraulics, numerical modelling, polar meteorology, ice-ocean interaction , ice cores, interaction of ice sheets with the solid earth, glacier fluctu ations, etc.
Lectures will be given in the morning and exercise
s (including computer projects) in the afternoon. An excursion will be orga
nised to nearby glaciers.
