DESCRIPTION:<p>Due to circumstances caused by the Corona pandemic, we have postponed th
 e course. The new course dates are <strong>April 10-18, 2021.</strong> We e
 xpect that the situation has improved by then, but if not, successful appli
 cants will be informed in due time.</p><p>We have also extended the registr
 ation date which is now<strong> March 8, 2021.</strong></p><p><strong>About
  the course</strong><br /> This course aims to bring young researchers toge
 ther across disciplines, within the broad domain of Arctic research and res
 earch communication, in order to build new networks and develop communicati
 ons skills. The objectives are both linked to different ongoing Arctic rese
 arch initiatives such as the Arctic Science IntegrAtion Quest (ASIAQ) Proje
 ct and Arctic Avenue, and to make a communication effort for the Tarfala Re
 search Station, TRS. The course thus deals with both current Arctic researc
 h as well as focuses on learning research communication skills.</p><p><stro
 ng>NEW Course date<br /> </strong><strong>April 10-18, 2021</strong>, inclu
 ding travels to/from Stockholm, Sweden.</p><p><strong>Tarfala Research Stat
 ion</strong><br /> <a href="https://www.natgeo.su.se/english/tarfala-resear
 ch-station" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Tarfala Research Station</a> is 
 a centre for Arctic alpine research at the Department of Physical Geography
  at Stockholm University. The station is beautifully situated in Lapland in
  an Arctic/alpine environment. The research conducted here focuses on glaci
 ology, hydrology, meteorology and climate research. The station is also use
 d as an education platform by universities that wish to combine fieldwork w
 ith lectures.</p><p><strong>Course content</strong><br /> The course is pri
 marily aimed at young scientist (MSc students, PhD students, Postdocs) in A
 rctic research and is given in English. This course has a transdisciplinary
  approach and focuses on both Arctic research and the role of communicating
  research.</p><p>The course involves a set of relevant lectures and tutoria
 ls about ongoing Arctic research, TRS and communication techniques. Main em
 phasis will be placed on group work and a final communication effort/produc
 t which is to be produced during the course. The course starts with introdu
 ctory lectures from different topics. Field work, group discussions and gro
 up work will follow.</p><p><strong>Practical work</strong><br /> Please not
 e that the field component may involves long hikes and work during sometime
 s difficult Arctic/alpine weather conditions. Participants are required to 
 bring suitable clothing and shoes for this.</p><p>Students are asked to coo
 perate in small groups (3-4 persons) with different task of interest in the
  realm of relevant research.</p><p><strong>Learning outcomes<br /> </strong
 >The course strives to improve transferable skills such as multidisciplinar
 y approach and collaborative learning.</p><p>In the end of the course the s
 tudent will have</p><ul><li>increased knowledge of current Arctic research 
 and ongoing Arctic research initiatives</li><li>knowledge about different c
 ommunication techniques</li><li>ability to understand and evaluate communic
 ation efforts</li><li>increased skills to communicate and visualize researc
 h</li></ul><p><strong>Grants and additional costs<br /> </strong>We offer g
 rants which covers the course fee, and parts of the travel. This includes</
 p><ul><li>all academic and social program during the course</li><li>accommo
 dation (shared rooms), food and logistic during the course</li><li>a return
  train ticket with the night train from Stockholm train station to Kiruna t
 rain station (this is already pre-booked for your convenience)</li><li>Snow
 mobile ride to and from Nikkaluokat to TRS</li></ul><p>The grant does not c
 over</p><ul><li>travel expenses to and from Stockholm train station and bus
  fare between Kiruna train station and Nikkaluokta</li><li>personal health 
 and civil liability insurance</li><li>personal expenses such as drinks, tel
 ephone, etc.</li></ul><p>Grants will be provided for approximately three yo
 ung researchers affiliated with the <a href="https://bolin.su.se/arcticaven
 ue" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Arctic Avenue programme</a>, and three y
 oung researchers from each <a href="https://asiaq.org/about/" target="_blan
 k" rel="noopener">ASIAQ partner university</a>, i.e. Stockholm University, 
 KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Umeå University, Northern (Arctic) Feder
 al University, University of New Hampshire and University of Tokyo.</p><p><
 strong>Travels</strong><br /> We encourage all participants to take the nig
 ht train from Stockholm to Kiruna, bus to Nikkalukta and then snowmobile to
  TRS. t.</p><p>The snowmobile ride is 24 kilometers in mountainous terrain 
 and we will arrange drivers for you how are not eligible to drive a snowmob
 ile yourself. You can bring one backpack with personal clothing and items. 
 Sensible hiking shoes are required. Helicopter service from Nikkaluokta to 
 TRS is available, but needs to be paid individually if used.</p><p><strong>
