APECS International Polar Week March 2023
APECS International Polar Week is a traditional APECS event held twice a year during the equinoxes (March and September), that is, the dates when the Sun is exactly above the Equator, making day and night of approximately equal length in the northern and southern hemispheres. This is a celebration of the polar and alpine regions with the aim of increasing interest and knowledge about these regions.
The next international polar week will take place between 27 March - 2 April 2023 and on these dates, we want to engage students, researchers, educators and everyone interested in the polar regions to share experiences and curiosities at a series of events around the world.
We are planning to cover several topics during the week including the Arctic, Antarctica and Alpine regions, the importance of polar regions for climate change, polar art and polar engineering.

Submit your short poem!
Submit your 3–10-line poem (haikus are welcome) here.
The poems will be presented on APECS International social media during the Polar Week. With this action we raise awareness about ourselves as being participants in Polar spatial and temporal realms.
See all submission here!Describe your perception of yourself as a polar scientist researching the Poles in the poem. We are looking for poems that tell something about your self-reflection. Here are some questions to start with:
- What do you feel when you think about the Arctic/Antarctic spaces?
- What are the things that you wonder about the Poles?
- Why are you drawn to a specific Polar research subject?
- How do you perceive yourself when you’re doing fieldwork or being a polar observer/researcher afar?
- Do you feel connected to the Arctic or Antarctic - why and how?
- How do you perceive other people or researchers in the Poles?
