APECS and the organizers of the 2018 North Pacific Arctic Conference (NPAC) held from 15 – 17 August 2018 in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States with the theme "Arctic 2030 and Beyond – Pathways to the Future" are looking for early career researchers to join their sessions.
In total we need for the following four conference sessions one early career researchers each:
- Session II: The Future of Arctic Ocean Cooperation
- Session III: Climate Change in the Arctic: Future Directions for Adaptation
- Session IV: Trends in Arctic Resource Extraction and Logistics – Global Drivers and Regional Conditions
- Session V: The SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) and Agenda 2030 in the Arctic

The selected early career researchers would participate in the conference
- as panelists in one of the sessions
- as contributors to the published NPAC 2018 Proceedings and
- as participants of the general discussion and contributors to the social media output of the conference and potential published policy briefs
- contribute a 5 - 7 page summary document
All selected early career researchers would receive the following funding support:
- Airfare to Honolulu from their home location
- Per Diem Ground Transportation
- Other Travel Costs
- They are included in all NPAC 2018 programs, events and special dinners
Who can apply?
- To apply for this opportunity, you have to be early career researchers (US citizen or international) based at a US institution (university, research institution or other institution where they are engaged in a professional career with Arctic perspectives)
- working on a research topic that fits the topic of the session you apply for

SESSION II: The Future of Arctic Ocean Cooperation
- (i) What are the challenges of implementing the CAO fisheries agreement?
- (ii) What additional cooperative initiatives and measures beyond the Polar Code might
be considered to strengthen shipping safety and environmental protection in the
Arctic? - (iii) What is the state of play in the Arctic Council's Task Force on Arctic Marine
Cooperation and how might regional marine cooperation be further enhanced? - (iv) What progress has been made in establishing MPA networks in the Arctic and
what are the main constraints and challenges? - (i) What are the opportunities for enhanced marine scientific cooperation?
SESSION III: Climate Change in the Arctic: Future Directions for Adaptation
- (i) What are the major challenges of adaptation to climate changes facing Arctic communities and how can they respond to these challenges?
- (ii) How will acidification affect living marine resources in the Arctic, and what will be the consequences for Arctic communities?
- (iii) What are Arctic States, local communities and business communities doing or planning in relation to adaptation – and what could they do?
- (iv) What are the implications of the Paris Agreement for adaptations in the Arctic?
- (v) What are the opportunities and constraints for the Arctic Council to address mitigation? Can its role be increased?
SESSION IV: Trends in Arctic Resource Extraction and Logistics – Global Drivers and Regional Conditions
- (i) What are the tradeoffs among commercial, political, social and environmental considerations in Arctic resource extraction and logistics projects?
- (ii) What is the future of global demand for Arctic resources, and will development of these resources be sustainable based on market forces?
- (iii) Will the shipment of natural gas from Yamal LNG and Arctic LNG 2 have broader consequences for commercial shipping in the Arctic?
- (iv) What are the implications of China’s extension of its “Belt and Road” initiative for the development of Arctic nonrenewable resources?
- (v) What will be the impact of the 4th Industrial revolution on Arctic nonrenewable resource development and logistics?
SESSION V: The SDGs and Agenda 2030 in the Arctic
- (i) What SDG goals and targets are relevant to the Arctic?
- (ii) What role will Arctic governance structures (e.g. the Arctic Council) play in achieving the SDGs?
- (iii) Are there appropriate roles for non-Arctic states in long-term planning to address Arctic issues?
- (i) What should be the role of corporations and public-private partnerships in achieving these goals?
