The journal Earth System Science Data (ESSD) (IF: 9.197, ISSN: 1866-3508) is currently running a Special Issue entitled " Extreme environment datasets for the Three Poles". Dr. David Carlson, Dr. Mike Sparrow, Dr. Xin Li, Dr. Min Feng, and Dr. Tao Che are serving as Guest Editors for this issue. We would like to invite you to submit articles for consideration and possible publication in this ESSD special issue.
The Three Poles (i.e., the Arctic, the Antarctic, and the Tibetan Plateau) contain the world’s highest mountains and store more snow, ice, and freshwater than anywhere else in the world. However, the regions were found to be particularly sensitive to climate change, and their changes could also lead to critical feedback loops of global climate changes and the sustainability of human society. Unfortunately, our understanding of the Three Poles, especially the connections among the regions, is still limited. The spare and scattered data collected and produced for these harsh environments are one of the main bottlenecks for promoting comprehensive studies of the regions. This ESSD special issue aims to review and present existing and new datasets for the Three Poles region, to recognize these valuable datasets and promote their use in international and interdisciplinary studies of the Three Poles.

The special issue has been activated for submission since December 1, 2020, and its deadline is December 1, 2021. You may send your manuscript now or up until the deadline. Submitted papers should not be under consideration for publication elsewhere.
Earth System Science Data (ESSD) is an international, interdisciplinary journal for the publication of articles on original research data (sets), with goals to make data sets a reliable resource to build upon and to reward the authors by establishing priority and recognition through the impact of their articles.
It is important to note that the ESSD publishes data products and data descriptions, not research papers! Therefore, the data’s quality, validation, and access are critical for the submission. The precondition to submitting a manuscript for publication in ESSD is that the datasets referenced in the manuscript are submitted to a long-term repository to fulfill the criteria on reliable durable data access, i.e., open access, permanent identifiers, liberal copyright, and long-term availability. Details of the criteria and recommendations are discussed in the ESSD guidelines (https://www.earth-syst-sci-data.net/10/2275/2018/). The authors are encouraged to choose the data centers that support the ESSD data criteria, e.g., the Third Pole Environment Data Center (https://data.tpdc.ac.cn/en/), when preparing data for submission.
