Association of Polar Early Career Scientists

The Juneau Icefield Research Program (JIRP) invites researchers to join us for the Summer 2020 field season and beyond. We facilitate research in the areas of Glaciology, Atmospheric Science, Polar Ecology, Biogeochemistry, Geomorphology, Geology, Tectonics, and Polar Engineering. We can provide logistical and infrastructure support for your projects and provide opportunities for broader impacts, outreach, and interdisciplinary collaboration. JIRP maintains several remote field stations across the 4000 sq. km Juneau Icefield in Southeast Alaska and can support research teams from these camp as well as from satellite tent camps. We can provide equipment (snow machines, generators, tents, etc.), personnel (safety professionals, camp managers, or supporting staff), logistical planning, and an extensive knowledge of the region, terrain, and resources. We can support single year efforts and help researchers put together multi-year externally funded studies. We aim to foster collaboration among all selected research teams and provide the opportunity to share resources and capabilities, and potentially broaden the scope of each group’s science. We are particularly interested in supporting early career scientists.

In addition to supporting external research, JIRP is a field science education program with a number of long-running monitoring and research projects. Each summer, we train 30-35 undergraduate or early graduate students in polar Earth systems science. We can support research teams in conjunction with our primary summer field school program (June 7 – July 31, 2020) or potentially on the fringe of our main season (March through September). Participating research teams will have the opportunity to broaden the impact of their work and engage dozens of students in the field.

The easy access, proximity to amenities, established facilities and infrastructure, and experienced staff, make JIRP a unique opportunity for high-latitude or alpine research. Conducting research on the Juneau Icefield can provide significant cost efficiency relative to Antarctica or Greenland; we estimate five to ten fold savings depending on the specific project, thus offering opportunity for affordable polar pilot studies as well as research specific to the Juneau Icefield.
