About the artwork and artist
Artist: Abraham Anghik Ruben
Title: Failing Light
With the decline of the fortunes of Viking colonists in North America and the drastic change of climate in the North Atlantic, from warm to cold, the Vikings must choose to abandon their far flung Northern outposts. The last departures would take place in southern Greenland. This sculpture of the mother bear with cubs represents that last generation leaving from Greenland back to Iceland. On the backside of the bear are decorative images from the Viking world. The front of the bear with the image of Sedna, and the two bear cubs playing inside the mother, this represents the coming of the new Inuit migrants to Greenland.
