WWU Munster carries out: basic research on the physical properties of snow and ice (including sea ice); field investigations, involving primarily the application of electro-magnetic reflection methods (radar) to derive the thickness and internal structure of glaciers and ice caps; and modelling of ice dynamics with an emphasis on shelf-ice processes. Maintains the "Archiv für Polarforschung" of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Polarforschung.
