International Arctic Science Committee (IASC)
The International Arctic Science Committee (IASC) encourages, facilitates and promotes leading-edge multi-disciplinary research to foster a greater scientific understanding of the arctic region and its role in the Earth system. New and next generations of researchers will be faced with increasingly critical challenges due to the impacts of climate change on these regions and their global significance. IASC believes it is of great importance to foster these young researchers and promotes and involves early career scientists working in the Arctic by:
- striving for representation of early career researchers in the organization, including participation in business strategy, planning and other meetings and activities;
- providing endorsement, support and dissemination of information on activities, projects and request for participation;
- providing travel grants to early career scientist for selected conferences

Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR)
The Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) is a committee of the International Council for Science (ICSU), that is charged with the initiation, promotion and co-ordination of scientific research in Antarctica. SCAR also provides international, independent scientific advice to the Antarctic Treaty system. To meet the objective of developing scientific capacity in all SCAR Members, especially with respect to younger scientists, and promoting the incorporation of Antarctic science in education at all levels, SCAR will take the following strategic approach:
- works towards building human and institutional capacity for Antarctic science by a variety of means;
- promotes education of the public and of students so as to increase awareness of the value of Antarctic science; and
- promotes the development of Antarctic science through appropriate means.
- provides fellowships to encourage the active involvement of early career scientists and engineers in Antarctic scientific research, and to strengthen international capacity and cooperation in Antarctic research.

TUBITAK MAM Polar Research Institute – APECS Turkey
Under the auspices of the Presidency of the Republic of Turkey, supported and financed by the Ministry of Industry and Technology and under the coordination of the Polar Research Center of Istanbul Technical University (ITU PolReC); national scientific expeditions were conducted to the Antarctic in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
Polar Research Institute (PRI) was established in 2019 within Marmara Research Center (MAM) of “the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK)” to ensure the coordination and logistics of future national polar expeditions. Therefore, the fourth Turkish Antarctic Expedition (TAE - IV) was carried out in 2020 under the coordination of the TUBITAK MAM Polar Research Institute.
Polar Research Institute aims to provide support for R&D and scientific research studies that can be conducted in polar regions, to operate Turkey’s polar research camp(s) and station(s), to plan and coordinate logistics, to facilitate communication among relevant organizations, to conduct bilateral international collaborations, to develop and implement the national polar strategy in cooperation with stakeholders, to raise awareness of polar regions at the national scale, to materialize national and international scientific diplomacy on polar regions and to increase the scientific involvement of Turkey in science by representing in the international arena. The Institute’s vision is to serve as an interface conducting the efforts in science, research, and development in technology and to raise awareness and provide training/education on climate change.
The goals of PRI are;
- to ensure Turkey support the Antarctic Treaty System,
- to conduct polar expeditions to provide scientific studies in these regions,
- to establish and operate a Scientific Research Base in Antarctica,
- to create a coordination center/platform for the participation of all stakeholders in Turkey,
- to raise awareness and provide training/education about climate change,
- to ensure the transposition of polar environmental law to national law,
- and to ensure the formation of an organizational scientific memory about the polar regions.
In line with the Management Policy of TÜBİTAK MAM, Polar Research Institute aims:
- to conduct studies at national and international standards by employing innovative perspectives, equipment, and technologies at the maximum level,
- to form an organizational memory about the polar regions and to become a coordination center for scientific studies in Turkey.
To ensure that the goal of raising awareness of Polar Regions and Climate Change, all the studies are conducted by APECS Turkey and Turkish Students Polar Research Team (PolSTeam) under the TUBITAK MAM PRI. APECS Turkey has a effective Education and Outreach program, executed by APECS Turkey members. Annually, they visit about 30-60 primary, middle and high schools, make age orientated presentations about climate change and Polar Regions. In addition, APECS Turkey members organize public events and surveys.
To reach more children and people, 150 science teachers all around Turkey are trained and half of those teachers founded polar clubs in their schools (60 clubs * 10-20 students/per year). During their club activities (1 hour/week for 20 weeks) they follow a designed curriculum and supported by educational sources by APECS Turkey members. Another project, named “Educators Supporting Collaboration on Polar Regions Project (ESCoP)”, is supported by TUBITAK MAM Polar Research Institute to involve educators in the Arctic and Antarctic expeditions to improve their knowledge on Polar Regions and polar science. A national call for the project is opened annually for educators. Additionally, APECS Turkey members are working with the Ministry of Education to add more climate and polar issues to national curriculums for all grade students.
