When we conduct research in the Arctic we are visitors in someone else's homeland: people who live there all year round, who have unique knowledge and wish to be involved in research concerning their land and ways of life. In this pair of webinars, arising from conversations at the 2017 Siberian Environmental Change Network (SecNet) workshop (arranged in cooperation with INTERACT), two speakers will build on their personal experiences to highlight ways in which researchers can successfully engage with local communities, from a Canadian and a Russian perspective.

Исследовательская этика: границы «поля» и границы ответственности
Вебинар посвящен вопросам этики, встающим перед исследователем, начиная с кабинетной работы, а затем - в полевых исследованиях, во время анализа и публикации данных. Мы поговорим о том, зачем учитывать этические принципы тем ученым, для которых основной предмет исследования лежит за пределами сообщества, и как "человеческое" вплетено в связи различных природных, экономических, технических, физических феноменов окружающей реальности. Как связаны открытость местному сообществу коренных жителей и язык концептов, на котором мы зачастую говорим? Как сохранить уважительную дистанцию и, при этом, наладить партнерские отношения? Что нужно учитывать, делая ставку на многолетние полевые исследования в одном и том же микрорегионе? Всегда ли, имея в виду практическую пользу от исследований в области благополучия и здоровья населения, а также развития поселков в целом, мы учитываем нужды, желания, и ценности, скрытые в сознании местных жителей? В чем отличие работы с сообществом в западноевропейской, американской и канадской традиции от ситуации в российской науке? И, наконец, как взаимодействовать с сообществом местных жителей, если оно порой разорвано или отсутствует как таковое? -
Research ethics: boundaries of the “field” and limits of responsibility
This webinar is dedicated to ethics issues that arise before the researcher starting from the stage of development of the program of study, in the field, during the analysis and publication of data. We will talk about why it’s important to consider ethical principles for those scientists, for whom the main subject of research is not focused on the community itself, and how human is intertwined in connection with various natural, economic, technical, physical phenomena of the surrounding reality. How is openness to the local indigenous community linked and the language of concepts that we often speak? How to maintain a respectful distance and, at the same time, to establish partnership? What should be taken into account when betting on long-term field research in the same micro-region? Do we always take into account the needs, desires and values that are hidden in the minds of the local people, keeping in mind the practical benefits of research in the field of welfare and health of the population, as well as the development of settlements in general? What is the difference between working with the community in the Western European, American and Canadian tradition from the situation in Russian science? And, finally, how to interact with a community of local people when a community is sometimes split to parts or even absent?
