The Japan Agency for Marine and Earth-Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) is recruiting personnel for about five JAMSTEC Young Research Fellow (JYRF) positions.

The Arctic Challenge for Sustainability II (ArCS II) project invites applications for their International Early Career Researchers Program.

As a priority program of the ArCS II project, this call for applications invites a wide range of International Early Career Researchers from the Arctic and non-Arctic countries who are engaged in Arctic research and supports their research, by providing financial support for mid- to long-term travel and stay at universities and research institutions in Japan. At the same time, this project aims to revitalize mutual exchange between Arctic researchers in Japan and early career researchers overseas and strengthen the cooperative system for international joint research.

The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) invites registration for the Global Indigenous Youth Summit on Climate Change. This online conference will take place 9 August 2023.

The Global Indigenous Youth Summit on Climate Change (GIYSCC) is being convened by, for, and among Indigenous youth (in contrast to Elders), who will participate in designing the agenda and invite the participants from three eight-hour time zones, in a 24-hour period, on 9 August 2023 (United Nations International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples). In a complementary context, the Summit will precede the United Nations International Youth Day on 12 August.

The Early Career Investigator Program in Earth Science is designed to support outstanding scientific research and career development of scientists and engineers at the early stage of their professional careers. The program welcomes innovative research initiatives and seeks to cultivate diverse scientific leadership in Earth System Science. The anticipated average award to individuals is $100,000 per year for a period of up to three years, subject to the project's satisfactory progress and the availability of funds. Eligible principal investigators (PIs) must be a recent Ph.D. recipient, defined as having graduated on or after January 1, 2017. The proposal PI must have successfully completed their Ph.D. defense prior to the due date for proposals.

The International Mohn Prize for Outstanding Research Related to the Arctic (Mohn Prize) welcomes nominations for 2024. The Mohn Prize is a collaborative effort of UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Academia Borealis – The Academy of Sciences and Letters of Northern Norway, and Tromsø Research Foundation in close collaboration with Arctic Frontiers.

The Mohn Prize aims to set central issues for the further development of the Arctic on the national and international agenda by rewarding outstanding scientific performances. The prize is 2 million NOK (approximately 180 000 Euros).

Nominees for the prize will be evaluated by an international scientific committee. The recipient of the Mohn Prize will be announced in autumn 2023, and the award ceremony will take place at Arctic Frontiers in Tromsø in early 2024. Tromsø is an important European hub for international research, economic development and political debate in the Arctic region.

Each year in the spring, the Ice Drilling Program (IDP) works with its Science Advisory Board and the research community to update the Long Range Science Plan. This Plan identifies the science in the coming decade that will require the use of ice drilling technology and expertise for the community.

In addition to the medal & awards on the EGU union level, the EGU Division on Cryospheric Sciences awards two prizes each year:

• The Julia and Johannes Weertman Medal is reserved for individuals in recognition of their outstanding scientific contribution to the study of the cryosphere on Earth or elsewhere in the solar system.
• The Division Outstanding Early Career Scientist Award recognizes scientific achievements in the field covered by the cryospheric division, made by an early career scientist.

The American Geosciences Institute (AGI) is looking for early-career geoscience professionals to present (individually or as part of a panel) in a one-hour webinar as part of a series focusing on mapping. AGI will be hosting a series of webinars over the next year in which early-career geoscience professionals will share their work and will be compensated for their time. The intended audience of each webinar is high schoolers. Those who participate will act as “near peer” communicators about technologies and techniques related to mapping and geoscience careers in general. The International Commission on Polar Meteorology (ICPM) is a focus group for research into the meteorology and climatology of the Arctic and Antarctic. It is one of the ten commissions of the International Association of Meteorology and Atmospheric Sciences (IAMAS), which is in turn part of the International Union of Geodesy and Geophysics (IUGG). SCAR launched its 2023 Antarctic-related Fellowships for early-career researchers today. Following the launch of the Polar Initiative in 2022 the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has funded an additional SCAR fellowship and as a result SCAR will offer in total four to five fellowships of up to USD $15,000 each for 2023.
