Polar and Alpine Community News

In 2022, the US National Science Foundation, via the Ice Drilling Program, funded a workshop for US early-career researchers to become more involved in the ice-core community. The Ice Core Early Career Researchers Workshop (ICECReW) was held January 5-8, 2022, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and online. Participants met with established researchers to better understand outcomes of and resources available from past ice core projects, learn about opportunities to engage with future efforts, and connect with potential collaborators. Participants also produced the following series of articles, published in Past Global Changes Magazine (https://doi.org/10.22498/pages.30.2), to help communicate ice core science to undergraduate students and ice core-adjacent researchers:

• The Arctic Snow School offers a high-level transdisciplinary training to better understand the dynamic processes of Arctic snow, its relationship with climate and wildlife, and its importance to northern communities in a changing North.

• The school will be held April 1-8, 2023 at the Canadian High Arctic Research Station in Ikaluktutiak (Cambridge Bay), Nunavut.

• Graduate students and post-doctoral fellows from all disciplines with a strong interest in snow are invited to apply before January 15, 2023.

The Climate & Cryosphere (CliC) Core Project of the World Climate Research Program provides grants that aim at increasing the engagement of Early Career Scientists in CliC. The project strives for gender balance and geographical diversity so submissions from regions currently under represented in CliC, such as Asia and Africa, are particularly encouraged.

ICECReW 1.5-day workshop before US Ice Core Open Science Meeting

The second Ice Core Early-Career Researchers Workshop (ICECReW) will be held on May 7 and 8 2023, ahead of the US Ice Core Open Science Meeting (May 8-10) at the University of Washington, Seattle. ICECReW is an opportunity for early-career researchers to meet and discuss ice core science. The focus of this year’s workshop is encouraging collaboration and generating proposal ideas. 

The GRS on Polar Marine Science is a meeting specifically designed for early career scientists. The aim of GRS is to bring together early-career researchers in all fields of polar marine science (marine biology, chemistry, physics, geology and technology) to discuss interdisciplinary links and provide a basis for future collaborations. GRS will therefore provide a forum for graduate students and postdocs to present and discuss new data, cutting-edge ideas and multidisciplinary approaches with experts in different fields of polar sciences.

Objectives

Covering up to 49% of the total land surface in midwinter in the northern hemisphere, snow is a crucial component of the cryosphere. Snow plays a key role in our environment, with social and economical implications such as the climate change, natural hazard, tourisms, etc. How does snow behave and interact with its surrounding largely depends on its microstructure, which varies widely from light dendritic snowflakes to small rounded grains or dense melt crusts. Measuring and characterizing snow is essential.

How to bring local, traditional and Indigenous Knowledge together with the 'western' approach to science to improve research and environmental observations across cultures? In this session Indigenous youth from the Arctic will discuss and raise awareness for their ideas and visions on how to combine these different knowledge systems based on their life experiences.

Together, among European and Arctic youth, we will exchange different perspectives and discuss how to make young people’s voices heard in the Arctic. Be prepared for a very interactive and participatory session and a productive dialogue with us.We are looking forward to meeting you all!
